Mar-03-08 | | Jason Frost: 3 wins including one over Spielmann, plus draws against Marshall, Reti, Rubenstein, and Tartakover do a Czech Champion in 1923 make. |

According to "Bratislava Pressburg Pozsony" by A. Robert Neurath, Walter died in 1940. |

The English Wikipedia has: "Max Walter (born 1899 – died 1945) was a Slovak chess master." So, not only the year of death is different. The Slovak Wikipedia has "Max Walter (* 1896 – † 1940)" and the following remark: "Max Walter apparently died in a concentration camp in 1940, although there is a record of his alleged participation in a tournament in Madrid 1945." |

Dec-09-13 | | Karpova: 8th Congress of the Czechoslovakian Chess Federation in Pardubice, August 5 to 18, 1923. Championship Tournament (11 rounds):
1. Max Walter 8.0
2. Amos Pokorny 7.5
3. Karl Vanek 7.0
4. Sherry* 6.5
5-7. Sifalda 5.5
5-7. Berger (Brno) 5.5
5-7. Prokes 5.5
Further participants were Dr. Hubert Prochazka, Dr. Tereba, Dr. Vitkovsky (Pseudonym), Schulz and Mikulka. 50% of 11.0 points were necessary to gain the <Meisterwürde>, i. e. to become a master. This was reached by all participants down to place 7. Max Walter started with 4 consecutive draws (Sherry, Sifalda, Pokorny and Prokes) and then had a winning streak with the sole exception of a loss against Vitkovsky on time (Walter had a winning position). So his overall score was +6 -1 =4. Sherry scored +2 -0 =9. * Pseudonym, he was from Prague
This game is from the tournament Prokes vs K Vanek, 1923 (although the report has the game ending after 43...Rd4). The game Walter-Vanek may be submitted later. Source: Pages 209-213 of the September 1923 'Neue Wiener Schachzeitung' |

Mar-25-22 | | Jan Kersten: There is an extensive biography now about Max Walter and his brother Jacob, with more than 150 games, viz. https://www.chess.sk/download/dokum...
It seems he did indeed escape to Spain and played some tournaments there around 1945.
But this has to be checked by someone who can read Czech. |

Nov-26-22 | | Mr. Walter: Hey, I don't know if this chat is still active, But I'm actually a relative of Max Walter, I still don't know exactly what kind of, but was probably the uncle of my grandpa, Marcel Walter, the thing is, unfortunately, I've never got to meet my grandpa, because he died at 63 years old, at 1995, however, he did talk with my father about that his relative(my father says uncle, yet we aren't sure since maybe my father don't remember it good) was the champion of Czechoslovakia in Chess.
First of all, I would like to say that there is Probably no way Max was born in Brno, I know for sure that my father's family were from Bratislava, at the street of Holy Joseph, I have no idea were he was born, but I'm pretty sure they lived all at Bratislava.
My father says he thinks Max have died before the holocaust, however if there are facts here that prove different then such say is probably wrong.
My father also told me Max was addicted to chess and was in a lunatic asylum, but unfortunately I can't know that as well because my father side were all very good in Chess, so it could've been someone else maybe from the family, and there is a chance that again my father is not remembering good because those conversation between my grandpa and my dad were spoken a long long time ago. I will probably talk with my grandma which is still alive and may stay like that, maybe they have talked about subject, even though there wasn't great love between them so I don't know if they would speak on such stuff but maybe they actually did.
Another thing I know is that Max was living in a lot of countries in Europe, probably because of the competitions.
I know I don't have a lot of Information about him I just wish my grandpa was alive so I could see him and talk to him about that, he would definitely know about it but he was smoking a lot and then what happened happened...
I was so shocked to see people are actually interested and talking about Max(and Jakob) and from the biography you sent here I learned so much about my family and I just want to thank you so much!
I will check this forum once in a while so feel free to continue the chat, this is my Discord in case you have some Information about Max because I would love to hear it or if you just want to talk about it -

Nov-26-22 | | Mr. Walter: By the way, I'm not sure about him being the uncle since it was written in the biography his father was Adolf Walter but my grandpa's dad was also Adolf Walter, yet married to Aranka Zlotizka and not Theresa Dushinsky as it was written and this made me very confused because they can't be brothers(my grandpa was born in 1922), so i think Adolf Walter, my grandpa's father was named after his father maybe, but the major thing i forgot to add, is that a very big part of my grandpa's family died in the Holocaust, and some survived, and Max wasn't in the survivors, yet i can't know if he was of the dead, yet this very much makes it more likely he died in the holocaust, yet at least from my father's words there is a low chance and probably not true that he died before the holocaust, about the 1945 competition this is very interesting and confusing. |
