Kibitzer's Corner
Dec-30-11  paavoh: A very good performance by Hess. Tiviakov got a solid but slightly passive position out of his favorite Scandinavian. After 22. c4 White never let go.
Dec-30-11  Shams: Great stuff. 35.d5 is a marvelous way to cap things.
Dec-30-11  King Death: It was always fun to drop a pawn or a piece on a square that was covered multiple times, but the opponent couldn't take it. Or leave it there either.

Hmm. There are more openings in chess than I thought.

Jan-01-12  belgradegambit: This win gave Hess the tournament championship. Very impressive to beat Tiviakov in his pet opening. 35. d5 was indeed a nice shot.
Jan-02-12  paavoh: @belgradegambit: Apparently, GM Kovchan is the real winner, not GM Hess. One of Kvchan's games is not listed in the crosstable. Please see:

LOL. And it's getting worse.

They are currently looking for names for the openings in each of the Fischer Random Chess positions. It has been discussed to sell the naming within the first 4 moves on an action. Keep an eye on these matters if you yourself should want immortality by having a chess opening named after you.

Oh, and whomever thought, that FRC would mean that you could relax and skip opening theory, think again.

That all that happened was, that got a thousand times more demanding speaks for itself.

fredthebear: <Apparently, GM Kovchan is the real winner, not GM Hess.> GM Hess/White is threatening Mate-in-Two in the final position shown. Black can give up material to delay the checkmate, but mate is unstoppable.
Nov-01-22  Brenin: 35 d5 is a splendid move, and 35 ... Qxd5 is the only reasonable response, e.g. 35 ... exd5 36 Nd4, or 35 ... cxd5 36 c6, or 35 ... e5 36 dxc6, all with significant material gain for White. Later, 38 ... Rxb4, allowing White's R to invade with 39 Ra1, was a mistake, whereas 38 ... Bf8 39 Qxf6 Rxb4 40 Rxe6 Qxc5 would have kept Black in the game, e.g. 41 Rxc6 Rb1+ 42 Kh2 Qh5+.
Nov-01-22  ChessIsLife159753: Great game. It's easy to focus on 35.d5! which was indeed great, but 11.Be5!! is my favourite move. White doesn't allow the f6-knight to move. Also it's great to see how White is always preventing ...c5 (e.g. 23.Qb3! and 27.c5!).
Nov-01-22  ndg2: <sfm><it has been discussed...>NFTs for FRC openings? I'm all in! You can have my "Frankenstein Gambit" in the BQNBNRKR (Pos 001) for the bargain of $20,000!

Well, one thing that doesn't speak for itself, at least as far as I'm concerned, is today's pun. I've said it out loud several times, even trying different accents, but I still don't get it.

I've checked back a couple times hoping someone would explain it.

<Hans Niemann : Chess speaks for itself>

One month later, Hans beat Magnus again and the cheating controversy with Magnus happened and Chess Speak for Itself became a catchphrase all over the internet.

Nov-01-22  goodevans: <lechacal> Thanks. I did think 'Hess' might stand for 'Chess' but the the missing 's' on the end of 'speak' it just threw me.

As far as I can make out, Niemann did say "speaks" rather than "speak", but if he did say the latter then you were spot on to echo that.

Been a while since <Missy> has given us a HMN controversy pun. Guess I should have expected one soon.

<I've checked back a couple times hoping someone would explain it. [comment in toto (sans quote)]>

I wonder why <OCF> would bother to post this without offering a fellow member a hint in the right direction?
