Kibitzer's Corner
Oct-09-11  AVRO38: I've always suspected that the King's Gambit is a forced win for White and this game just adds to my suspicion.

SteinitzLives: Yes the the KGA is a forced win for white as long as it's blitz chess and you play so conservatively that you don't put a piece permanently on to the 5th rank until move 22, and don't fall asleep out of boredom during the opening.

Here Short's 5.Bb3 is not the sharpest choice, though he won a nice game. I wonder if he passed on 5.d4 Bb4 6.e5 Ne4 7.Kf1 Nxc3 8.bxc3 because of Black's relatively new and annoying 8...d5 (instead of 8...Bxc3 9.Ba3! Bxa1 10.Bd6!! intending 11.Qg4 with a dangerous attack). Probably it is silly to speculate about choice of opening for a blitz game but I'm very curious about this line in particular.

Oct-10-11  APatzer: This is the shortest win of the match !
Oct-10-11  whiteshark: Nice win with the ♔gambit.
Oct-10-11  Billy Ray Valentine: I'm really wondering why Black didn't play 8...f3.
Oct-10-11  Robed.Bishop: A Pink Floyd day.
Oct-10-11  hedgeh0g: Some very entertaining games in this match. I'm glad both players came with such a combative spirit.
Oct-10-11  DarthStapler: I'm pretty sure this pun has been done before

Domdaniel: If 35...Kxg5, White must retreat the Rf8 to f3/f1/f4 in order to stop Black's e-pawn. It might have been worth playing another couple of moves to see Nigel's choice, though the ending is an easy win for White once that e-pawn falls.
Oct-10-11  sicilianhugefun: Good thing Nigel Short wasn't whitewashed all throughout unlike the good old days...
Oct-10-11  KingsGambit73: @ Billy Ray Valentine

8...f3 is better for white after gxf3 0-0 and Bg5 h6 Bh4. White is definately better, I remember Rybka recommended this move f3 but it isnt that good believe me its better for white. and @ Shams, 5. Bb3 is more accurate then 5. d4 which will give black a better game. there have been some old games which GM Heikki Westerinnen won with White but nowadays with the strong computers black found a good way to play against it, Bb3 is still good for white. Or at least equalish positions arise.

Oct-10-11  kevin86: A short game turns Mr.Short into Deep Blue against Mr Kaspy.

"Don't get short with me,Mr. Kasparov!"

playground player: Is the King's Gambit more popular in blitz than in regular chess?
Oct-10-11  I play the Fred: <playground player>: I would think so.
Oct-10-11  YetAnotherAmateur: For those wondering where this came from, it's one of the nice little gems of W.S. Gilbert, from The Mikado:

"To sit in solemn silence in a dull, dark dock,
In a pestilential prison, with a life-long lock,
Awaiting the sensation of a short, sharp shock,
From a cheap and chippy chopper on a big black block!"

Oct-12-11  Billy Ray Valentine: Thanks, KG73. I was sure there was a reason--as it is the obvious move to consider here. Looking at it a bit more, White has the option of castling Queenside also after 8...f3. Also, black's d-pawn is quite weak.

My only thought is whether Black can sacrifice a pawn in the line you mention. In other words, instead of h6, playing Be7 and letting go of the d-pawn. But I suppose you are saying there is not enough compensation for the pawn in such a line?

< KingsGambit73: @ Billy Ray Valentine 8...f3 is better for white after gxf3 0-0 and Bg5 h6 Bh4. White is definately better, I remember Rybka recommended this move f3 but it isnt that good believe me its better for white. and>

kamalakanta: Hi! After 8...f3 9.gxf3 it seems to me that 9...Nh5! is better than 9...0-0. Any thoughts?

harrylime: Was wondering why Gazza did'nt play 20..b4 but just noticed Short has 21.d5 in answer.

29..f4 was worth a try but still seems to favour white.

@Kamalakanta .. 9...Nh5 is certainly interesting ! Especially for a blitz game.

Aug-22-12  Helios727: After 35... Kxg5 36. Rf1 Rb8 37. Re1 Rxb3 38. Nd5 a5 39. Rxe3 Rxe3 40. Nxe3 a4 41. Nc2 Kf5

Won't black get at least a draw after his king scoops up white's c and d pawns?

Nov-20-13  peltonen: Helios727: you suggest very poor moves for White, so your continuation ends up in a draw. 36. Rf3 and Black can't save E-pawn
