Kibitzer's Corner
Mar-23-04  morphyvsfischer: What's a yunior?
Mar-23-04  Lawrence: A yunior is a Swedish junior.
Apr-02-04  morphyvsfischer: But these guys aren't Swedish! Nigel's English and Kaspy's Russian! Chessgames.com...
Apr-03-04  acirce: In what way is a yunior a Swedish junior? The Swedish word for junior is - junior...
Apr-03-04  Lawrence: <acirce>, how do you pronounce it?
Apr-03-04  acirce: I'm not good at phonetic transcription, but the emphasis is on the last syllable, "u" is pronounced in the unique Swedish way so hard for immigrants to learn, there is no buzzing "dj" in the beginning etc. Hope that helps. ;)
Apr-04-04  Lawrence: <acirce>, "there is no buzzing "dj" in the beginning"--that's why I made the joke in the first place. Sorry, I should have put one of those smiley things to make it more obvious what I was trying to imply, that the Swedish pronunciation of "junior" is, to our ears, "yunior".
Apr-04-04  square dance: <lawrence> any interpretations on how the swedes might say jumpin jimminy?
Apr-04-04  Lawrence: <sd>, in fact I had that in one of my posts a couple of weeks ago but I can't remember which.
Apr-04-04  square dance: <lawrence> whats that card game that where people are always saying jick joker jack queen, etc? i wonder if they play that in sweden?
Apr-04-04  acirce: Lawrence, oh now I see.
Apr-04-04  Lawrence: <sd>, as we're telling pronunciation jokes today, how's this one? In a Chinese/Japanese restaurant, Customer: "Waiter, this chicken is rubbery!" Waiter: "Thank you very much."
Apr-04-04  square dance: <lawrence> have you ever seen the movie "lost in translation"?
Apr-04-04  square dance: <lawrence> btw, good one! lol
Apr-04-04  Lawrence: <sd>, didn't like the film but loved Scarlett Johansson.
Apr-04-04  square dance: <lawrence> who doesnt love scarlett johansson? if any guy doesnt find her attractive they must be...ummmm not attracted to big lips, yeah thats what i was thinking. ;-) i thought the movie had some hilarious parts but was kind of slow. bill murray did give a great performance in the movie and scarlett just had to be there for me, but i think she was also good, but i really didnt notice. the movie had me won over with the opening shot.:-p
