Kibitzer's Corner
Oct-28-02  refutor: is this game score correct? 13. ... Bxf2+ looks very weak coming from a super GM like ivanchuk

Honza Cervenka: It seems to be unbelievable but the game score is correct. Ivanchuk probably saw a ghost...;-)
Nov-30-03  mack: did he miss the queen and want to lure the queen out? peculiar...
Nov-30-03  fatbaldguy: The only thing I can think of is that he figured white would have to recapture with the king (14 K:f2), after which 14 ... Qd4+ would win the rook in a1. Obviously, if that was the plan, 14 Q:f2 ruined it...
Apr-02-04  nikolaas: I never thought somebody like tchuky would ever play such a blunder. Especially not if they're older than 10 years.

  al wazir: What were black's alternatives? If 13...Bxb4 then 14. Qxb4. If 13...Be7 then 14. Rxe7. If 13...Bb6 or Bd6 then 14. c4 followed by 15. c5. If 13...Bd4 then 14. Be4 Qd6/Qd7/Qd8 15. c3 Bf6 16.Qc2, with good attacking chances.
Apr-09-06  Confuse: yeah its kinda sad that when gms make huge blunders like this and karpov vs christiansen(?) make it to the most notable games. but it lets us see that they are people too. so i dunno. gg /end rant
Apr-09-06  Jim Bartle: "... it lets us see that they are people too."

Then it's about time for Ivanchuk to quit proving he's a "person" so often...

Dec-13-06  ahmadov: I found this game in "The encyclopedia of chess openings" by Matchukevich. I wonder how could Ivanchuk make such a blunder?
Dec-13-06  ahmadov: Oooops, sorry! The correct title of the book is "The Encyclopedia of Mistakes in Chess Openings".
Jul-23-07  Morozov: I am quite perplexed. I really do not know why Ivanchuk moved there. Normally, with a blunder there is some reason for it. Kramnik missed the checkmate (Qh7 if I recall correctly) because of his superior pawn advantage, but I can't even see a plan with this one.
Aug-10-07  PAWNTOEFOUR: it's nice to see that even 'super' gm's are capable of doing what i do every day on playchess........'makin' blunders'
Jan-03-08  hesyrett: Let's cut Ivanchuk some slack; since this was a playoff game in FIDE's demented and debased version of the "world championship", it was doubtless a blitz game.  How far had the mighty FIDE fallen in the 50 years since the 1948 match-tournament won by Botvinnik!  Let him who has never pitched a piece in a blitz game cast the first stone.
Jan-03-08  crwynn: It was g/25+10 (http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail...), enough that this would be pretty embarrassing. And it wasn't desperation as Al-Wazir suggested, at least 13...Bd6 14.c4? Qh5 looks good for Black to me, White loosens d3, takes c4 from his bishop and drives Black's Q to a better place. I think just 14.Bb2 was Nisipeanu's idea.
Jun-09-08  hedgeh0g: Not exactly a "notable game". "Notable blunder", perhaps...
Feb-22-09  WhiteRook48: Ivanchuk was crazy to blunder like that
May-01-09  WhiteRook48: if it was blitz, than that explains everything
Apr-08-12  jmuller: Hey Al :-)

13...Bd6
14. c4 Qh5
15. c5 Qxh2+!
16. Kf1 Bf4!

:-)

Jul-27-14  Xeroxx: terrible
Jul-27-14  whiteshark: <Xxx> Vassily the Terrible?
