What if Akobian and So had played and drawn? Assume that no other game results would change (no way to know this). So: 5 more ELO points; $$$ and WC qualification unchanged. Akobian: 5 fewer ELO points; a couple thousand dollars less in prize money, to be divided roughly equally among Kamsky, Sevian, Shankland, Troff ($500 to $700 each, more or less). But what about the WC qualification for them all? If I understand correctly, Sevian and Kamsky are in and would still be; what about Akobian? Would he still be in? If his tiebreaks were better than Shankland's and Troff's, then he would still be in. Shankland is in and still would be in any scenario, since he qualified in a different event. But if Troff's tiebreaks were better than Shankland's and Akobian's, Troff would be in instead of Akobian. If Shankland's tie-breaks would be best, then I don't know whether the next spot would to the rating pool, or would go instead to whichever of Troff and Akobian had the better tie-breaks. |

Therefore, the shenanigans (if we wish to consider it that) doesn't even have dire WC qualification ramifications. If someone got screwed, it's someone on the ratings list. |
