Apr-16-15 | | Kinghunt: <HeMateMe> It's Toiletgate all over again, only for real this time! |

Apr-16-15 | | Appaz: <<chancho> Yeah, someone wiping their bottom while looking at a comp...> Actually, that's quite normal these days. You have probably noticed the drastic decrease in the presence of paper media on toilets after the smart phone arrived. |
Apr-16-15
 | | alexmagnus: <ut of concern is the strict order of the implied rankings near cut off points, as even small rating perturbations may change such things as seeding or even who qualifies for an event and who does not.> Not even that in most cases. After all, it's not a single rating, i's the <average> of 12 to 24 months that qualifies. |
Apr-16-15 | | Kanatahodets: <schweigzwang: Maybe someone who is better with stats, convolution integrals, and Laplace transforms can give us an estimate of how many games &/or FIDE monthly rating lists need to go by before a 5-pt or 10-pt ELO blip has been rendered unnoticeable? I'm not saying that makes up for anything, but at some point the blip will have been dissipated (statistically--butterfly scenarios are another matter, of course).> I know very well, how convolution of two distributions look like:) But I usually by-passed applying the messy integral formulae - it's quite intractable. Instead I used expressions for the sum of known distributions. But I am sure that So just need an excellent performance at Gashimov and everything will be erased. |
Apr-16-15 | | Tiggler: <Kanatahodets: <Tiggler: There are no winners, though. Akobian, Rich and US Chess got a real black eye out of this, and their penalty is only beginning.> Absolutely true. But Rich tried to defer responsibility to Mr. Guiadelupe. I am not sure about the role of the latter in all this fouled story. It's hard to believe that such an experienced arbiter had made such a blunder.> Rich, who has the responsibilty, calls a wise mentor, OK, and gives him a quick summary of the situation as he sees it and asks for an opinion. Nothing wrong with that. But then later in public, he names the person he called, and uses that to justify his decision. Very low behavior. Obviously if asked again in future, Guiardelupe should say "no comment", or perhaps: "my advice is that you should step down immediately and ask the organizers to send me plane tickets so that I can take your place." |

Apr-16-15 | | diceman: <Gaioz Nigalidze, was caught cheating. He was using a smart phone that he'd hidden in the bathroom> <Kinghunt: <HeMateMe> It's Toiletgate all over again, only for real this time!> ...wonder how many ply the toilet tissue was? |
Apr-16-15 | | Absentee: <Tiggler: But then later in public, he names the person he called, and uses that to justify his decision. Very low behavior.> ?! What's wrong with openly saying he consulted Franc Guadalupe?
It wouldn't justify a decision or defer the responsibility in any way. |
Apr-16-15 | | Shams: <Absentee> Did Rich say he merely consulted or did he imply that Guadalupe agreed with the course of action taken? If it's the latter I must agree with <Tiggler> that it is tacky and unprofessional behavior for Rich to say that. You can't have it both ways, either the buck stops at your desk or it doesn't. |
Apr-16-15 | | Appaz: <<diceman> ...wonder how many ply the toilet tissue was?> Isn't it custom in Dubai just to wash with water? |
Apr-16-15 | | Tiggler: <schweigzwang: Maybe someone who is better with stats, convolution integrals, and Laplace transforms can give us an estimate of how many games &/or FIDE monthly rating lists need to go by before a 5-pt or 10-pt ELO blip has been rendered unnoticeable?> <Gypsy: <(statistically--butterfly scenarios are another matter, of course)> Good way of saying/seeing it.> The ELO rating method is a disturbance rejecting system, is it not? |
Apr-16-15 | | Tiggler: <Absentee: <Tiggler: But then later in public, he names the person he called, and uses that to justify his decision. Very low behavior.> ?! What's wrong with openly saying he consulted Franc Guadalupe? It wouldn't justify a decision or defer the responsibility in any way.> What's wrong with it is that it is unlikely that Guadalupe expected to be named, after being privately asked for advice. He has no responsibility for the decision, so should not be implicated in it. |
Apr-16-15 | | schweigzwang: Yes Tiggler it seems to be; I was just wondering how long the "relaxation time" is (some combination of games and integral months, it must be). |
Apr-16-15 | | schweigzwang: On a separate topic but relevant to this page, does anyone know what the "special prizes" ended up being? I haven't found them on the official site. |
Apr-16-15 | | diceman: <Appaz: < <diceman> ...wonder how many ply the toilet tissue was?> Isn't it custom in Dubai just to wash with water?> ...makes computer jokes more difficult. |
Apr-16-15 | | Tiggler: <schweigzwang: Yes Tiggler it seems to be; I was just wondering how long the "relaxation time" is (some combination of games and integral months, it must be).> I think you are asking about the eigenvalues of an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process. But I am getting out of my depth: <gypsy> is the guru. |
Apr-16-15 | | schweigzwang: ooooooooooooooo Tiggler thanks for the tip. Next time I have insomnia I'll know just what to read up on. |
Apr-16-15 | | schweigzwang: Let's play "What If?"
What if Akobian and So had played and drawn? Assume that no other game results would change (no way to know this). So: 5 more ELO points; $$$ and WC qualification unchanged. Akobian: 5 fewer ELO points; a couple thousand dollars less in prize money, to be divided roughly equally among Kamsky, Sevian, Shankland, Troff ($500 to $700 each, more or less). But what about the WC qualification for them all? If I understand correctly, Sevian and Kamsky are in and would still be; what about Akobian? Would he still be in? If his tiebreaks were better than Shankland's and Troff's, then he would still be in. Shankland is in and still would be in any scenario, since he qualified in a different event. But if Troff's tiebreaks were better than Shankland's and Akobian's, Troff would be in instead of Akobian. If Shankland's tie-breaks would be best, then I don't know whether the next spot would to the rating pool, or would go instead to whichever of Troff and Akobian had the better tie-breaks. |
Apr-16-15 | | Tiggler: <what about Akobian? Would he still be in?> No, because there is a requirement to score at least 50%, regardless of the finishing order. Unfilled spots can arise, therefore. These go to the next player on the (global) average rating list. |
Apr-16-15 | | schweigzwang: Oh yes the 50% rule. Good catch. But that means that Akobian isn't in fact "taking" a WC spot from anyone else here. Therefore, the shenanigans (if we wish to consider it that) doesn't even have dire WC qualification ramifications. If someone got screwed, it's someone on the ratings list. |
Apr-16-15 | | Tiggler: <schweigzwang> Makes it more likely that another federation will squawk about it. Same case for Sevian's qualification. Perhaps they will want to have the St. Louis Chess Club declared to be a crime scene, so they can send a forensic team. |
Apr-16-15
 | | tpstar: <wonder how many ply the toilet tissue was?> Brilliant. He would have got away with it, if not for that stool pigeon. |
Apr-17-15 | | Tiggler: He was playing the comode-o dragon. |
Apr-19-15 | | MagnusVerMagnus: These are the reasons shaking with you left hand is.....AN INSULT |
Nov-03-15
 | | perfidious: <kummatmebro....(So-Akobian) is probably (Akobian's) most exciting win in his entire career.> lmao--you may well be right about that! |
