 | | Penguincw: And Hansen has drawn the 3rd seed Eljanov. Eljanov was under mild time pressure, but a 3-fold repetition secured the draw. Huge result for Hansen, as he proves he can play any type of opposition. Prior to facing the 1st and 3rd seeds, the average rating of his opponents was 2349! Not only it is a huge result for Hansen, but it's a big one for L'Ami as well. If he at least draws Melkumyan, he will clinch at least a share of first; a win would secure first. In his game, he is up a pawn in a rook and queen endgame. His opponent also has 2 minutes to play 6 moves. |
Mar-17-15 | | haydn20: That olde wisdom--when outplayed complicate--saves Mosesian. He gives Black a choice between a reasonable move and a winning move, and Black misses the winning 26...Kxe7. |
Mar-17-15 | | haydn20: I am reminded that one thing (aside from lack of ability and/or laziness) that kept me down was failing to win won games. |
Mar-17-15 | | jphamlore: Granda Zuniga fails to attend to King safety, especially with White's bishops pointed kingside, and pays the price for it in a near-miniature: F Libiszewski vs Granda Zuniga, 2015 |
Mar-17-15 | | haydn20: Looks like Melkumian has set up the needed fortress and his Q+R can keep White's K from activating, so: 1/2-1/2. |
Mar-17-15 | | haydn20: <jphamlore> So far, Libiszewski is winning (my) overachiever award. |
Mar-17-15 | | Manders: Congratulations to Erwin L'ami for winning the tournament with a round to go , a monumental result for him. |
Mar-17-15
 | | Penguincw: L'Ami has clinched the tournament, but there are 9 players with 7, and 20 half a point back, so the rest of the standings is still uncertain. Eric Hansen (Canada) gets white against Daniel Naroditsky (United States) tomorrow (I feared Hansen would have to face L'Ami). |
Mar-17-15 | | haydn20: In l'Ami-Melkumyan, Stockfish suggests that any reasonable king move: g6,f8 or e8 draws. Instead, Black plays 65...Qe7??, expecting 66. Qxe7 =, but running into the in-between 66. Rf5+! winning. L'Ami is sure playing nice chess. |
Mar-17-15 | | PhilFeeley: A well-deserved win by L'Ami. He just never quit. |
Mar-18-15 | | PhilFeeley: Wouldn't it be great if L'ami beats Eljanov today? |
Mar-18-15 | | SimonWebbsTiger: @<PhilFeeley>
Such a shame he drew one. Could have been huge had he gone 100% in the city of Fischer's greatest victory and (almost) his last resting place, ie. thinking of the 6-0 scores and that 63/64 US Chp. |
Mar-18-15 | | SimonWebbsTiger: I have, once again, enjoyed the live commentary from Iceland. I think Ingvar and Fiona have done a good job trying to cover as many boards as possible, providing their thoughts (chess and humour), and also interviewing the players post-game. Also nice with Ian Rogers popping in from time to time. |
Mar-18-15 | | Kanatahodets: Shame, shame, shame. The tournament website http://www.reykjavikopen.com/results/ is atrocious - the results for 2015 are in fact for 2014! Real results page http://chess-results.com/tnr143563.... is also a shame - third of the table is blocked by RBC advertising. Finally this CG page is a shame too - I even don't want to comment on the results. For tournament organizers - it costs nothing to maintain news - give me this task and I will find 10 grad students each of whom will do that. |
Mar-18-15 | | Kanatahodets: Each time I should refer to chessbomb.com for real updates and clear exact information. If chessbomb can do that why not 1. tournament organizers? 2. chessgames.com? Anyway, Shakh played strange opening and is losing very early. Abdumalik is on rise - she may get 2400 easily. |
Mar-18-15
 | | Penguincw: Looks like Navara could suffer his 2nd white loss to a <2602 this tournament. |
Mar-18-15
 | | Penguincw: Navara has fallen, but more black wins could be coming. Eljanov is much better against L'Ami (-4.11) and Libiszewski is looking to take down Jones (has a queen vs. rook and bishop with pawns on both sides of the board). Just scrolling down further, I noticed there are a lot of black upsets. Perhaps the white players are going all in and failing. Luckily, Eric Hansen won't be a victim today, as he's already drawn Naroditsky. |

Mar-18-15 | | siggemannen: <Kanatahodets>, try adblock (not adblock plus) for your web browser. I don't see any ads at all on chess-results :) |
Mar-18-15 | | PhilFeeley: <third of the table is blocked by RBC advertising.> This is often a problem there. Click on the "Show tournament details" link and that should remove the ad from the crosstable. |

Mar-18-15 | | Kanatahodets: <PhilFeeley: <third of the table is blocked by RBC advertising.> This is often a problem there. Click on the "Show tournament details" link and that should remove the ad from the crosstable.> thank you; it works. Abdukalik did well - 2400+ For her age it's an achievement. Otherwise I don't see if any IM fulfilled GM norm. |
Mar-19-15 | | PhilFeeley: <I don't see if any IM fulfilled GM norm.> What were the norms? There were so many GMs here that it was difficult for any IMs to complete a norm. The only ones I could see were possibly Norowitz, Sarkar and Khademalsharieh, all with 7/10. The others with 7 probably didn't play enough GMs yet. This was a tough event. Navara lost his last round game and ended with 6.5/10, good enough for 32nd! |
Mar-21-15
 | | eternaloptimist: Congrats to GM L'Ami for winning this strong Open tourney! It's also good to see that my fellow American (GM Naroditsky) had a good tourney & didn't suffer a single defeat. He's a solid player that's really improved over the last few years! |
Mar-25-15 | | kummatmebro: Omg l'ami won
Carlsen better eatch his back or l'amis gonna get him!!! |
Mar-25-15 | | whiteshark: <kummatmebro> That's what I've been saying for years. |
Apr-20-15 | | avenant69: The player in this tournament called Gudmundur Sigurjonsson is not the well known GM, but a much younger namsake, born in 1967. The older player stopped tournament play at least 10 years ago. |
