Jun-12-09 | | paavoh: <virginmind> I guess Fritz did not see as far as Motylev did. I believe that he saw the advantages of the exchange sac and the vulnerability of the pawns on dark squares quire early. A fascinating game! |

Jun-12-09 | | NewLine: ..Be6 is ridiculous for a human brain |

 | | tamar: Motylev has the advantage, but took the repetition.
Not sure if it is winnable. |
Jun-12-09 | | DCP23: Congrats to Alexander Motylev on a very convincing tournament victory! And on entering the 2700+ club! |
Jun-12-09 | | BushWhacker: I think as long as Bologan's king stays on white squares Motylev can't do anything constructive, specially white covers the queening square by his white-square bishop! |
Jun-12-09 | | Shajmaty: <BushWhacker: I think as long as Bologan's king stays on white squares Motylev can't do anything constructive, specially white covers the queening square by his white-square bishop!> Well, the game ended some time ago... Draw, by the way. |
Jun-12-09 | | malthrope: WoW - was on the edge of my seat for that last game! ;) Congrats to GM Alexander Motylev for not only winning the Karpov Tournament but to do so undefeated! (+5 =4 -0). Looks like we have a new entry in the +2700 club! :D |
Jun-12-09 | | geeker: Ditto on the congratulations for "Mr. Moto"! And to all the players for providing many exciting games. The final round was more interesting than usual! |
Jun-12-09 | | wordfunph II: ahhhh! what a draw between Bologan and Motylev though i think still playable til the end....chess is brutal!...not for the weak hearts! |
Jun-12-09 | | arman07: Congrats GM Motylev. ...welcome 2 2700 club |
Jun-12-09 | | Absentee: Shirov wins M-Tel undefeated only to place last, failing to score a single win, in a category 18 tournament. Either he was mentally drained after M-Tel, or this is Shirov's evil twin. |
Jun-12-09 | | visayanbraindoctor: Impressive last game in Bologan vs Motylev. They really went for each other's chess throats, instead of the usual peacefully quick last round draw. This needs more analysis but I think that Motylev's exchange sacrifice was sound. It allowed his King to zoom right in the white Kingside and massacre the pawns there, and gave him two dominating bishops. Bologan in fact was forced to give back his rook for one of the bishops; or after Motylev Queens his pawn, the subsequent Queen plus Bishop plus Bishop attack would have been immediately fatal for White. |
Jun-12-09 | | acirce: What a performance by Motylev.
Too bad Shirov couldn't get a consolation win like Ivanchuk did in the last round of Sofia. |
Jun-12-09 | | euripides: I remember quite liking Motylev's games in the 2004/5 (??) Russian superchamionship. Not that that means a lot, but some bloke who won that tournament liked them as well. |
Jun-13-09 | | micahtuhy: Didn't Shirov just WIN a super-tournament, what in the fire on board blazes happened? |
Jun-13-09 | | amadeus: This is Shirov's worst performance in the last 12 years -- at least. Hopefully, he will play much better in Bilbao. |
Jun-13-09 | | whiskeyrebel: Shirov will bounce back of course. The boards must have been coated with asbestos. Good job Motylev. |
Jun-13-09 | | frogbert: and while shirov <started> with 4 losses, naiditsch <finished> with 4 losses - and i think <his> next event is dortmund in less than a month. the last round pulled rublevsky up above 2700 again, while naiditsch dropped nearly 20 points in his last 4 games to fall below 2700... |
Jun-13-09 | | adair10: <whiskeyrebel: Shirov will bounce back of course> He will have that chance in a tournament in Romania that starts tomorrow |
Jun-14-09 | | melianis: OK, they may play also 1.d4... looked a bit like this was a themed 1.e4 :-) |
Jun-14-09 | | DCP23: Bazna Kings in Romania starts today.
The pairings are already announced, and the first round is: Kamsky - Shirov
Radjabov - Gelfand
Nisipeanu - Ivanchuk
Waiting for CG.com to set up a page for the event. |
Jun-18-09 | | dumbgai: I don't get Shirov. He was in great form at M-Tel... |
Jun-19-09 | | positionalgenius: <dumbgai> he is a very unstable player |
Jun-19-09 | | kurtrichards: In Bazna Tournament, after 5 rds of play GM Shirov has +1-1=3 enough for a share of 3rd place with still 5 more rds to go. |
Jul-04-09 | | whiteshark: 24 decisive games out of 45, that are impressive 53,3%. |
