offramp: Also part of a second's duty is to go to the board, stop the clocks and say, "Okay. I think my boy's had enough."
Mar-31-06  Bobak Zahmat: What are you talking about?
Sep-27-06  RonB52734: This evidently is a picture of Epishin: I wonder if acirce actually saw this face in his dream? :)http://www.newinchess.com/Archives/...
Jun-12-07  midknightblue: Epishin was at the HB Global a couple years ago. He is a very large man. Perhaps the worlds expert on the sicilian Kan. I am always interested in his lates Kan games. I noticed he was in an OKELLY just yesterday

Mar-23-09  slomarko: yes similar

JointheArmy: There's a story a I heard on the now defunct website WCN. I vaguely remember this, so it's not entirely accurate, but here it is.

My friend was playing at the Canadian Open and goes outside at night in the cold only to see GM Epishin. He's smoking and asks him if he knew who won the FIDE KO tournament in Libya. When my friend told him Kasimdzhanov won and Adams was one move away from winning, he said, <Kasimdzhanov is World Champion?> Then he shook his head, put out his cigarette and walked away.

Mar-24-09  JoseMacuteJr: I find it quite confusing in Kan and Paulsen openings. Up to the 10th move they are becoming similar to Taimanov and Scheveniningen, then we have the new one - svesnikov. American books mentioned Paulsen while most of those from europe mention Kan. ???
Mar-25-09  jetskyindian: Per Chessbase: "Epishin called the arbiter while pressing on his side of the clock. Anish tried to press down on the lever, but did not have a chance against the burly Russian GM."

Nice behavior Mr. Epishin, using your size against a little kid. Were you abused as a child? If I were arbiter I would disqualify you and ban your rear end so fast it would make your head spin. I would also report the incident to police - though they probably couldn't do anything - and write a letter to FIDE and recommend the strictest disciplinary action possible.

I hope you never get invited to another chess event in your life. You have absolutely zero place in the public chess world. Do us all a favor and GET OUT.

Mar-25-09  lorker: well, if he was really such a bad guy as <jetskyindian> and chessbase would like us to believe, why would Epishin agree a draw when his opponent only had 14 seconds left. People shouldn't believe the biased reports coming from chessbase. Epishins behavior doesnt seem so bad if you think about it, and it was only a blitz tournament, and his opponent had been moving in an unsporting manner.
Jul-11-10  wordfunph: GM Vladimir Epishin's Quotes..

"Top players do not play gambits because they are too risky. Top players prefer safe draws."

"Anand is stronger than Kamsky, but Anand has psychological problems."

"GM Vladimir Kramnik is a hard worker, but his problem is that he enjoys having fun, including a preference to drink."

"One should spend three times as much time studying one's own games than that of others since there are simply too much information around nowadays to study other people's games."

"Karpov is quite capable of winning the world title back from Kasparov."

happy birthday GM Epishin!

Jul-11-10  wordfunph: "Epishin, even with his rating of 2667, was the kind of man I felt an instinctive pity for: he was a step beyond plump, his hair was disheveled, his clothes were old and unwashed, and his heavy glasses slid down his nose like wax on a candle."

- J.C. Hallman

Jul-30-12  whiteshark: Vladimir Epishin is the winner of the third edition of the Festival “Land of the Elimi”, which was held in Erice (TP) July 25 to 29, 2012. The Russian GM lost only half a point in seven rounds and claimed the gold with 6,5/7.

That's rather funny. Forgive me if I'm wrong here, but I seem to recall a Chess Life report on a New York Open around 1989 or '90 or so -- I believe Khalifman won, and a bunch of young -up-and-coming Soviets were in it -- where these young guys, including Epishin, found a club with a couple rounds to go in the event that was especially hospitable to Russians.

The CL report went on to say that none of them was in much shape to play the day after, most taking quick draws, and whoever drew Epishin that round was lucky because, well, it wasn't a pleasant sensory experience to sit across the table from him that morning. Anyone who can further enlighten, or correct, the story, please do so.
