Jul-27-05 | | Stefan Lukke: So that's twice now Ernst has been player of the day. Is the selection random then <chessgames.com>? |

 | | alexmagnus: I hope it´s not random otherwise Lance Darling will become player of the day someday...:-) |

Apr-27-06 | | babakova: I have heard that Mr Ernst is a rather eccentric fellow. For instance there was a tv show about chess in sweden like 10 years ago (snilledrag) and Ernst was the only one of the participating grandmasters who refused to give vocal commentary to his games. He didnt like the idea of having his voice recorded or something like that. |

Apr-27-06 | | acirce: The White player in M Karp vs T Ernst, 1980 was mistakenly given as Karpov at first. <babakova> Yes, I guess he is a bit eccentric. I've met and talked with him a few times at tournaments. Btw, he has a rather special voice, so maybe that was the reason he didn't want it recorded. He's also a mathematician. His dissertation a few years ago was about q-calculus, whatever that is. |

 | | offramp: Q-calculus is the study of the sinusoidal pattern of voice-waves. |

Jan-11-07 | | Cyphelium: At a tournament a few years back (which I think Acirce played in too, BTW), Ernst and I had a cup of coffee at the same time in the café. As I happened to read Singh's book about Fermat's theorem, Ernst approached me. He produced a thick bunch of a4:s, which must have been said thesis or something related to it. It was page up and page down of algebra. He proudly showed it to me. I said something like "uh...how nice". I also remember him telling me that they had to get an 80 year old fellow from India to fly to Sweden to act as his opponent at the dissertation, because noone else could evaluate this particular work. Then he wanted to know if I was into mathematics. When I told him 'no', he looked very disappointed and immediatly stopped talking to me. |

Oct-31-07 | | FHBradley: This is Thomas's abstract:
<In q-calculus we are looking for q-analogues of mathematical objects, which have the original object as limits when q tends to 1. q-Calculus has wide-ranging applications in analytic number theory and theoretical physics. The main topic of the thesis is the invention of the tilde operator and the renaissance of the q-addition. There are two types of q-addition, the Ward-AlSalam q-addition and the Hahn q-addition. The first is both commutative and associative, while the second is neither. This is one of the reasons why sometimes more than one q-analogue exist. These two operators form the basis of the method which unites hypergeometric series and q-hypergeometric series and which gives many formulas of q-calculus a natural form reminding directly of their classical origin. This method is reminiscent of Heine, who mentioned the case where one parameter in a q-hypergeometric series is plus infinity. The q-addition is the natural way to extend addition to the q-case as is shown when restating addition formulas for q-trigonometric functions. We give a more lucid definition of the q-difference operator. A new notation for powers of q reminding of the exponential function is given. A q-Taylor formula with remainder term expressed as q-integral is proved.> Well done, Thomas!
<We present a new expression for generalized Vandermonde determinants, and thus for the Schur function. We also obtain an equivalence relation on the set of all generalized Vandermonde determinants. We find a more general expression for the Vandermonde determinant. We show the connection to a determinant of Flowe and Harris and to the solution of difference and q-difference equations with constant coefficients.> |
