OLAF BARDA
(born Aug-17-1909, died May-02-1971, 61 years old) Norway

[what is this?]

Olaf Martinius Olsen was born in Oslo as the 5th child of Agnethe Olsen and seaman Ole Olsen. He changed his name to Barda in 1942. Awarded the IM title in 1952, and the GMC title in 1953, he was Norwegian Champion in 1930, 1947, 1948, 1952, 1953 and 1957. Among his best tournaments were Copenhagen 1947 (1st, ahead of Jens Enevoldsen and Daniel Abraham Yanofsky), Marianske Lazne / Prague Zonal (1951) (9th, IM title) and Jonkoping (1958/59) (1st= with Alexander Kotov, ahead of Viacheslav Ragozin).

He was a known problem composer and author of endgame studies. His book Sjakk! (Oslo 1943) was with its later editions a source for Norwegian players. After the war in 1945 he was a founder of the Norwegian Correspondence Chess (CC) Federation; he was then also an editor of the chess magazine Sjakkliv. He promoted chess on the radio, and during 1955-1971 he edited the daily chess column in the newspaper Dagbladet. Before this he also had chess columns in Magasinet for Alle (1935-1954) and in Swedish Schackvärlden (during the war). He was Norwegian CC champion in 1946 and 1950, and in 1953 he came 4th in the 1st World CC Championship.

Olaf Barda passed away in Oslo in 1971. On average he was probably Norway's strongest player in the period 1930 to 1960, and the first one to achieve an IM title. According to some sources (e. g. OlimpBase of 2011) he played for Norway in the 1956 olympiad, but that was his son Yngvar Barda (1935-1999).

OlimpBase: Before WWII he used to appear as Olaf Olsen. I don't know what was the story behind his name being changed.

Tabanus: He was really a chess allrounder. According to biographer and store owner (http://www.sjakkbutikken.no/) Øystein Brekke, the reason for his name change is that there was also another correspondence chess player named Olaf Olsen. That's the spirit!
