Nov-02-03  Resignation Trap: This Colombian player caused a minor sensation at the Stockholm Interzonal in 1962. He was in the lead after two rounds. This he accomplished by the simple task by defeating Geller and Korchnoi!

Chessical: Cuellar also gave a nasty fright to a young Karpov in R.7 of the 1973 Leningrad Interzonal.
Nov-03-03  Resignation Trap: Reshevsky was also given a drubbing at the Sousse Interzonal in 1967. See:

Cuellar-Gacharna vs Reshevsky, 1967

The finish of this game was really cute.

Nov-22-06  setebos: Dangerous dude, perhaps underestimated by his esteemed Soviet colleagues.
Nov-22-06  Albertan: One thing you can say about Miguel Cuellar Gacharna is that he was consistent. According to my Chessbase program, he scored at an elo of 2390 while playing the White pieces and an elo of 2392 when playing the Black pieces. He scored 9.5/14 at the 1972 Skopje Chess Olympiad, however he had an awful result at the 1973 Leningrad Interzonal (1.5 points in 17 rounds of play).
Nov-18-09  sneaky pete: Jan Hein Donner on Cuellar vs Donner, Skopje 1972.

Position after 87 moves, black to play.

Nov-18-12  brankat: Over the years he did surprise a few big guns :-)

Apr-18-17  Eduardo Bermudez: By February 1954, CUÉLLAR had reached a chessmetrics rating of 2623, good for #39 in the world. He had performed at 2665 at Mar del Plata 1953. With a 2600 performance generally denoting grandmaster standard, it seemed quite clear that CUÉLLAR deserved a promotion to the higher title, based upon least three strong results in good calibre events: 2627, at Mar del Plata 1952, 2665 at Mar del Plata 1953 y 2621 at Siegen Olimpyad 1970, with more than 50 chess games.
Apr-18-17  Eduardo Bermudez: "He defeated a number of top players in Interzonals, his victims including Efim Geller and Viktor Korchnoi (Stockholm 1962), Samuel Reshevsky, Aleksandar Matanovic, and Lubomir Kavalek (Sousse Interzonal, (1967))." In other events, he also defeat: Najdorf, Pilnik, Trifunovic, O´ Kelly,Bisguier, Szabo, Panno and Nogueiras, Yanofsky, among others.
