In 1948, James Barry Cross Jr. won the first California Open Championship. In 1950, he won the US Junior Championship, held in Milwaukee. Cross finished with an even score at Hollywood (1952). In 1957, he won the California State Championship.

Jan-29-25  Petrosianic: The 1961 USCF Rating List has Cross at 2408, which is higher than some of the participants in the US Championship that started that month.;

  beatgiant: <Petrosianic> This source https://www.chess.com/article/view/... claims he gave up chess when his mentor, IM Herman Steiner died. The timing doesn't quite fit, because Steiner died in 1955 and Cross played some serious tournament games four years later in 1959. But it's possible he had given up chess by 1961.
