Budapest, Hungary - Argentine GM Pablo Zarnicki had the painful duty of writing a memorial column to colleague Gerardo Barbero, who died at his home in Hungary recently after illness. He was only 39. Barbero, one of Argentina's major talents and national champion in 1984, moved to Hungary about ten years ago and had reportedly become friendly with the exiled Bobby Fischer. Barbero was a cheerful and enthusiastic man, and will be sorely missed. The database/bio page should probably be updated, Since <molinov> already mentioned he past away, in a post dated back in July 12, 2004! |

NN could have been another gm that was just not stated, even if it wasn't he was a man with cancer. You have no idea the impact that has on your game.In conclusion I highly doubt that most chessgamemembers could "whup" him |

As you know, as a true professional, Gerardo had an inspiring devotion to chess; he was a perfectionist in his games and coaching activities, trying for excellence in everything he did. All his chess-playing friends -- professionals, amateurs and aficionados -- knew his exemplary moral attitude both in his private life and his career. As Gerardo was very-very modest, unpretentious, and shy about receiving compliments, not many people -- except participants of the Geneva Chess Open and a few close chess friends -- in the wider chess world knew that he won a Fair Play Award for his exceptionally fair approach to chess, as demonstrated by a particular case at that tournament. Everyone who knew him admired the unique combination of a genius mind and a great heart. His kind nature was showed not
only to his family, but his chess friends too, so he was a very popular and successful team player and coach. For all his professionalism, he was always a very loveable, very good, and an extremely generous man. We were very inspired by his personality and admired his fighting spirit even when he faced cancer: his cheerfulness, strength and dignity maintained calm in our family life even as he struggled in the face of the inevitable outcome. We often complained that life was not fair, since he died at the age of 39 despite a completely healthy lifestyle, but he never complained, just continued to do what he could for his family. Even 5 weeks before his death, he won his game on the first board in the Hungarian Team Championship against an IM after a 6-hour match: his mind and his will remained perfectly clear until the end!
Gerardo, en exemplary human with a huge heart lives in our hearts and minds every day! We, his wife and son, are specially blessed to have had him in our lives, and his love gives us strength in our daily life. |

Obviously at that time he must already have been seriously ill (which probably explains why I managed to draw our game despite a 250 points rating difference), but he made no excuses at all and behaved wonderfully in the post-mortem analysis, where he shared many valuable insights. Indeed a great man and a great player whose premature death was particularly painful and who is still fondly remembered by many of his students and colleagues in several countries. |

Eugenio Torre Asia's first International Grandmaster; one of the Phillipines' strongest ever players. I asked Eugenio about Bobby Fischer's relationship with Barbero. Torre, who was Fischer's second during his 1992 rematch with Spassky, said that Bobby liked Barbero. He found him amiable.
Torre indicated that when Barbero was sick, Bobby wanted to help him. "I am not sure if he was able. Actually there was a time when Bobby, Barbero and I met together in Budapest through the invitation of Bobby. That was when I was with Bobby keeping him company.
