| Feb-01-13 | | thomastonk: On the occasion of his 116th birthday, I have tried to find a little bit information about Kroone. He begun playing chess before WWI in a chess club in Amsterdam called "De Toren" ("The Rook"), founded 1910. During the war he became the leading player there. He also played tournaments in the larger clubs in Amsterdam, in particular V.A.S. and A.S.C. In 1920 he joined the team of the A.S.C. and was a teammate of Euwe. He stayed there most of the 1920s, presumably his best time as a player as you can see from the two olympiads he played. Later in the 1930s and after WWII he played at Haarlem. I wonder about the many games with Euwe from 1919. They are labelled with "m1" and "m2", and hence I assume they were played in two matches. However, I did not succeed in finding a reference for these matches, neither in Münninghoff's Euwe biography nor in contemporary newspapers. Instead I found a newspaper report about a match played in 1923, which ended 3-1 in Euwe's favour (possibly the four games from that year are the match games, but at least I can confirm that G Kroone vs Euwe, 1923 belonged to the match). This match is not mentioned by Münninghoff, too. |

| Feb-01-13 | | Gejewe: <thomastonk> An interesting post. I remember that in the (early?) 1970ties "Schakend Nederland", the Dutch federation's magazine, had an interview with old Gerard Kroone. Before that I had never heard of the man, but this showed that there are many chessplayers of considerable strength we do not know of. When I remember this rightly the interview also had a picture of Kroone.
Strangely enough two other biographical efforts, Kmoch's "Euwe slaagt" (Euwe succeeds) and the the Euwe volume in the Wildhagen series (volume 18) give no reference to 1919 matches with Kroone either. And the last named has been edited by Euwe himself and gave many unknown games from clubevents.
But there is a rather unknown book on Euwe that does, "Max Euwe - de Nederlandse Wereldkampioen schaken - Deel 1: 1901-1935" by Jacques M. Vermeulen, from 2001. He mentions two matches with G.Kroone on page 5, the first a 5-5 tie and the second tied as well with 1 1/2 - 1 1/2.
But it is not clear from the bibliography where he got this information, for example he covered the magazine of our national federation from 1922-1936 (not 1919). |

Such overseas reports have usually predecessors in Dutch newspapers like "Algemeen Handelsblad" or "Nieuwe Rotterdamsche Courant", which appeared weeks or even months before. But in the case of the 1923 match, I have only found two reports that appeared in the "NRC" during the match, and both give some additional information. The first one is from September 6th, and states that a short match of four games is played in Haarlem between Kroone, the champion of Haarlem, and Euwe. It contains the first game. The second report appeared September 20 with the third game and the last game is announced to be played in the following week. <Gejewe> The little known matches from 1919 are very interesting! I am not sure what "Dutchbase" means. The only database from MEC I know, is the Euwe database. The MEC prepares the publication of an update (a ball I got rolling a little bit) where Peter de Jong serves as an expert, and hence I am sure it will be excellent (details can be found in the MEC Nieuwsbrief). |

 | | sachistu: Were correction slips submitted for the erroneous venue assigned to the Euwe-Kroone match in 1923? The 'Amsterdam m1' assignment is an old mistake in Chessbase, which still exists in newer versions of that database. As pointed out by <Thomastonk> and <Gejewe> these games were from the 4-game Euwe-Kroone match in Haarlem 1923. From the Dutch newspapers, it appears to have started on September 6th (as also mentioned by <Thomastonk>). The C68 game (0-1 in 39) (gid=1042104) is the first game as reported in the Dutch paper of Sept 6th. The B83 game (0-1 in 25) (gid=1042103) is the 3rd game as also reported in Dutch newpapers. It also appears in Chess Review,1949,Feb ,p46 and in BCM,1953,p217, and also in Euwe's book (From My Games, 1920-1937) on page 22. I do not have the Wildhagen volume that <Gejewe> references, but I'm sure he is correct. From accounts, we know Euwe won the match 3-1, and games 1 and 3 are well documented, plus Kroone won game 4, so it seems clear Chessbase simply made a mistake in the location. If correction slips have not been submitted, I'm happy to do so for games 1 and 3. Oddly, I could not find a reference to the 1923 match in TNSb 1923 or 1924. |
