FRANCISCO VALLEJO PONS (born Aug-21-1982, 42 years old) Spain [what is this?] GM Francisco ("Paco") Vallejo Pons won the 2000 U-18 World Youth Chess Championship and is Spain's top player. He scored 4 wins & 5 draws on 2nd board in the 2010 Olympiad. He has 30 wins & 25 draws overall in 67 games played as high as top board in the 6 Olympiads since 2000. Spanish champion in 2006 and 2009. He recently came =1st (2nd on count back) with Vugar Gashimov in the category 18 Reggio Emilia (2010), scoring 6/9. He came 5th in the 12th European Individual Championship (2011), thereby qualifying for the World Cup (2011) where he defeated Peruvian prodigy, GM Jorge Cori in the first round before losing in the second round to Cuban GM Lazaro Bruzon in the 25 minutes rapid-game tiebreaker after drawing the 2 game classical mini-match. He finished 2011 strongly with a win in the 21st Annual North American Open, but a poor performance (4/9) at Aeroflot Open (2012) plunged his rating below 2700. However, he immediately regained form in the 13th European Individual Championship (2012), scoring 8/11 to place =2nd (8th on tiebreak) to qualify for the World Cup 2013. In June 2012, he defeated Veselin Topalov in the XXV Ciudad de Leon: Topalov vs Vallejo (2012) by a margin of 3.5-2.5 (+3 -2 =1). At the European Individual Championships (2013), he again scored 8/11, this time sharing =1st although he placed 6th on tiebreak. At the World Cup (2013), he defeated 3-time Argentine champion, GM Diego Flores in the first round, but was eliminated when he lost in the round 2 tiebreaker games to Vietnamese #1 GM Le Quang Liem. Apr-19-15    Penguincw: Francisco Vallejo Pons has a decent tournament at the Bangkok Chess Club Open (2015) (if one excludes his last round loss, he had a pretty good tournament). He scored 6.5/9 (+5,-1,=3) and finishes in a 14-way tie for 5th (but 5th overall), although as the 2nd seed, he definitely expected better. Rating wise, he lost 2 points to move from 2696 to 2694 (not including the 8 points he lost from Aeroflot).
