GM Francisco ("Paco") Vallejo Pons won the 2000 U-18 World Youth Chess Championship and is Spain's top player. He scored 4 wins & 5 draws on 2nd board in the 2010 Olympiad. He has 30 wins & 25 draws overall in 67 games played as high as top board in the 6 Olympiads since 2000. Spanish champion in 2006 and 2009. He recently came =1st (2nd on count back) with Vugar Gashimov in the category 18 Reggio Emilia (2010), scoring 6/9. He came 5th in the 12th European Individual Championship (2011), thereby qualifying for the World Cup (2011) where he defeated Peruvian prodigy, GM Jorge Cori in the first round before losing in the second round to Cuban GM Lazaro Bruzon in the 25 minutes rapid-game tiebreaker after drawing the 2 game classical mini-match. He finished 2011 strongly with a win in the 21st Annual North American Open, but a poor performance (4/9) at Aeroflot Open (2012) plunged his rating below 2700. Dec-14-12  waustad: He's doing quite well in the Bundesliga so maybe he'll reconsider. maybe he just needs to take a year off like van Wely did. Being the Bilbao punching bag can't be all that much fun, but like van Wely, except for Tata A or Bilbao sorts of tournaments he'd be a formidable player.
Jun-10-13  Layson: Murmurs of a Vallejo Pons retirement have been grossly exagerated, it seems. He's been playing everywhere for 2 months now.
Apr-14-14  waustad: He's playing in the Bangkok Open now and is one of the leaders so far starting out at 4/4. The top boards are on chessbomb, and probably elsewhere, for those up at that hour. http://chess-results.com/tnr130151....

Aug-10-14  Mr. V: Congratulations on beating Kramnik in the Olympiad! Kramnik vs Vallejo-Pons, 2014
Aug-10-14  Mr. V: Does anybody here know his peak world ranking under FIDE ratings? Thanks!

Penguincw: Happy 32nd birthday to GM (and former Super GM) Francisco Vallejo-Pons. Currently, he's at 2698, so the 2700 club shouldn't be too far away.

BTW: This article (http://www.chess.com/news/magnus-ca...) says that Vallejo Pons retired from competitive chess, yet he's still playing in many tournaments, including the recent Olympiad and probably the upcoming Bilbao tournament. So has he retired or semi-retired or what?

Aug-21-14  waustad: <Penguincw>I think he said that in frustration after getting slaughtered at Linares yet again. He was the local hope against the very best and didn't do well. It was a little like Ivanchuk "retiring" after losing to Caruana. I think at the time he left the out of saying that the'd complete obligations in leagues and he did better there, so he continued with his playing career.

Wasn't Ivanchuk's ragequit/retirement after he lost to So at the World Cup a few years ago. I am actually fairly sure, that is was So and not Caruana.

Aug-22-14  waustad: <refused> That wouldn't surprise me at all. I have remembered wrong before this and I could easily have done it again.
Aug-26-14  waustad: It is nice to see that he's left handed! http://en.chessbase.com/Portals/4/f...

Penguincw: Congratz to Vallejo for playing 11 solid games in August to gain 14 rating points and re-enter the 2700 club, the sixth time in his career he's re-entered this club. :|

He's also doing pretty well at the Spanish Championship, starting out 5/5 and currently 6.5/7, as he's already increased his rating by 8.7 points. Never hurts to pick up these easy points (taking advantage of 4 whites against 2407 opposition).

Feb-01-15  Caissanist: Interesting that Vallejo chose to fly 3500 km to Moscow rather than making a quick drive to Gibraltar. He says that he wants to spend some time in Russia and study Russian: http://www.chessdom.com/francisco-v... .

Penguincw: Francisco Vallejo Pons has a decent tournament at the Bangkok Chess Club Open (2015) (if one excludes his last round loss, he had a pretty good tournament). He scored 6.5/9 (+5,-1,=3) and finishes in a 14-way tie for 5th (but 5th overall), although as the 2nd seed, he definitely expected better.

Rating wise, he lost 2 points to move from 2696 to 2694 (not including the 8 points he lost from Aeroflot).

Aug-21-15  tzar: Vallejo's best moments are well past...his game against Javier Moreno in the Spanish Team Championship 2015 is one of the worst comedy of errors I have seen for a GM in the last years...and Vallejo won the game!!!!
Mar-07-16  knighttoefour: What a fine quote of the day by Vallejo Pons:

"It's a very beautiful feeling when you don't see a big difference between winning or losing, just enjoying the pleasure of playing chess."

I haven't the slightest notion of what he is talking about, but it sounds simply splendid!

Mar-08-16  dehanne: Judging from some Aeroflot pics, he's sure aging horribly.
Sep-09-17  SugarDom: Go Vallejo Pons, bring down the haughty. 2 draws in classical is enough.
Sep-09-17  Amulet: Si <puliskarakter> hehehe nagago na.
Mar-24-18  Caissanist: A lot of us love to complain about our taxes, but it could be worse: https://www.chess.com/news/view/hun... . Poor guy, amazing that this kind of thing can happen in a supposedly developed country.

Fusilli: <Caissanist> Yeah, it's also on the news on CG's home page today: https://www.casino.org/news/spanish....

That's so unfair, poor Paco.
