Jun-15-15  Retireborn: His great triumph was at Manila 1974, ahead of Petrosian, Larsen, Portisch, Gligoric, Ljubojevic, Andersson, Torre.

Does anybody know what month that tournament was played in?

perfidious: <Retireborn> Perhaps Informator or the <Chess Player> would help; nothing on 365chess.
Jun-15-15  Chessdreamer: <Retireborn> Manila 1974 tournament was played from the 5th of October to the 24th of October, acc. "The Batsford Chess Yearbook".

perfidious: <Rhialto....But (Vasiukov) is still remarkably strong for a man born in 1933. He plays a lot on ICC, only 5-minute games, where he is usually around 2000-2100 (for people who don't know ICC, the 5-minute ratings are very "deflated" compared to both ICC blitz and classical FIDE/USCF ratings; most IMs are 2100-2200 I think, and most GMs are 2200-2400 - if they play 5 at all which many don't).>

Been many years since I played on ICC; as you state, the ratings were very much lower, as I was ~2000 and won a number of games vs IMs and scored the odd won and draw against GMs.

Jun-17-15  Retireborn: <Chessdreamer> Many thanks for your help, much appreciated!

Troller: I remember Vasiukov won a tournament in Denmark around 1990 ahead of (amongst others) old rival Bent Larsen. Always a strong veteran it seems.

kingfu: Evgeni is playing great Chess in the World Senior at 82 years old! He has 2 wins including one with black in the Dutch Leningrad.
Mar-05-16  TheFocus: Happy birthday, GM Evgeni Vasiukov.
Jan-17-18  crwynn: I am a fan of Vasiukov since he played me (old sarum) on ICC in several games when we were playing 5-min with similar ratings (his usually higher though). Like me, he did not really play until adulthood. Unlike me he became a grandmaster! I am well able to appreciate how amazing that is.

I admire him, though, not because of that but because of our games. This 80-year-old man would play some crazy gambit, sacrifice whatever i let him, and usually beat the stuffing out of me. My occasional victories were a source of pride.

Feb-22-18  PJs Studio: When Fischer went to Moscow in ‘58 it was Vasiukov who was claimed to have given him a beating in blitz. But accounts differ. Anyone know more about Vasiukov‘s claims of spanking the great Fischer?
Feb-22-18  TheFocus: False claim by Vasiukov. It was Petrosian who was brought in to spank Fischer.
Feb-22-18  PJs Studio: Multiple accounts say Petrosian had trouble with 15 year old. He came out ahead in blitz, but lost a few games to the 15 year old American Grandmaster

May-10-18  Nosnibor: I played in the World Seniors in 2014 and was therefore able to watch first hand Vasiukov in action.Despite being over 80 years of age he played with the energy of a man half his age.I believe he scored 6.5/11 which was one more point than myself. R.I.P. G.M. Vasiukov.

May-10-18  Lovuschka: RIP! Game against Boris Lebedev in Moscow 1960 is immortal, Vasiukov himself was not...

As it is not on chessgames, the game is copied in from an article I wrote ten years ago: https://www.chessproblem.net/viewto...

Moscow 1960
1.e4 e5 2.Sf3 d6 3.d4 Sd7 4.Bc4 h6?! 5.dxe5 dxe5 6.Bxf7+!! A very deep move, as we will see.
6...Kxf7 7.Sxe5+ Kf6 8.Sc3! Kxe5! 9.Qh5+ g5 10.Bxg5! hxg5! 11.f4+! Ke6 12.f5+ Ke7 13.Sd5+! Kd6 14.Qxh8 Sgf6! 15.0-0-0! Kc6! 16.Rhe1 b6 17.Sb4+! Bxb4? 18.Qxd8 Bb7. The white queen is trapped!

Should white lose after always playing the best moves? Black brought a very nice defense. Of course not! 19.Rxd7!! Sxd7 20.Qxg5 Bxe1 21.Qe3!
White also would have won after 19...Rxd8, but it would have brought up a position where it is easy to fail for white. Now, however, black will lose more material and the rest is silence. 21...Bh4 22.Qh6+ Bf6 23.e5! Rf8 24.exf6 Rxf6 25.Qf4 Bc8 26.g4 Sc5 27.b4 Sb7 28.Qe4+ Kd7 29.Qd4+ Rd6 30.Qg7+ Kc6 31.f6 Sd8 32.f7 Sxf7 33.Qxf7 Be6 34.Qe8+ Kd5 35.Qa8+ Ke5 36.Qxa7 Rc6 37.Qa4 Rc4 38.Qb5+ Kf4 39.g5 c6 40.Qxb6 and black gave up. Maybe he hoped for time trouble?

May-11-18  cunctatorg: The chess site chess.com has a truly excellent long article (by Peter Doggers) about the life and chess of the late Grandmaster and you can find there a lot of interesting information about Evgeny Vasiukov, Mikhail Tal and ... (!!...) Bobby Fischer; you can even find interesting information about the Vasiukov-Korchnoi or the Vasiukov-Karpov ... interaction! In my humble opinion the aforementioned article is the best possible eulogy to a chess Grandmaster of the classical era of chess!!

Rest in peace, Grandmaster Vasiukov...

nizmo11: <Paint My Dragon>: Reading this book now (e-book version). Very fascinating material. Nikitin writes in his introduction:
"I intended to create a realistic human and chess portrait, based on my humble memories and 30 games played by Evgeny Andreevich. [...]. When annotating the games to understand the psychology of two great chess players, I was trying to 'inhabit' both of them trying to understand how they were thinking on their moves."

My only complaint is that there are only those 30 games, including couple of draws and one loss; the famous "rescue hippo" game against Tal . Going thru Vasiukov's games, I feel that this number could easily have been at least doubled or tripled.

Aug-31-20  Paint My Dragon: <nimzo11> The book certainly has its strengths, but I confess I expected a bit more. Nikitin calls him 'My Vasiukov' and yet the biography doesn't show that level of intimacy - there are few anecdotes or details of life outside of his chess achievements.

No tournament record or crosstables? That aspect too was just a bit underwhelming.

On the plus side, the game selection echoed my memories of his play and they are nicely introduced and annotated. However, I'd agree with you that 30 games seemed insufficient, given the many thousand that he played. And even in the game notes there appears to be a reluctance to delve into personal anecdotes: "I heard many good things about Davy [Bronstein] from my long term friend ...".

Sadly, he doesn't then share even one of them.
