He plays a lot on ICC, only 5-minute games, where he is usually around 2000-2100 (for people who don't know ICC, the 5-minute ratings are very "deflated" compared to both ICC blitz and classical FIDE/USCF ratings; most IMs are 2100-2200 I think, and most GMs are 2200-2400 - if they play 5 at all which many don't).> Been many years since I played on ICC; as you state, the ratings were very much lower, as I was ~2000 and won a number of games vs IMs and scored the odd won and draw against GMs. |

| Jan-17-18 | | crwynn: I am a fan of Vasiukov since he played me (old sarum) on ICC in several games when we were playing 5-min with similar ratings (his usually higher though). Like me, he did not really play until adulthood. Unlike me he became a grandmaster! I am well able to appreciate how amazing that is. I admire him, though, not because of that but because of our games. This 80-year-old man would play some crazy gambit, sacrifice whatever i let him, and usually beat the stuffing out of me. My occasional victories were a source of pride. |

(!!...) Bobby Fischer; you can even find interesting information about the Vasiukov-Korchnoi or the Vasiukov-Karpov ... interaction! In my humble opinion the aforementioned article is the best possible eulogy to a chess Grandmaster of the classical era of chess!! Rest in peace, Grandmaster Vasiukov... |

Very fascinating material. Nikitin writes in his introduction:
"I intended to create a realistic human and chess portrait, based on my humble memories and 30 games played by Evgeny Andreevich. [...]. When annotating the games to understand the psychology of two great chess players, I was trying to 'inhabit' both of them trying to understand how they were thinking on their moves."
My only complaint is that there are only those 30 games, including couple of draws and one loss; the famous "rescue hippo" game against Tal . Going thru Vasiukov's games, I feel that this number could easily have been at least doubled or tripled. |

Nikitin calls him 'My Vasiukov' and yet the biography doesn't show that level of intimacy - there are few anecdotes or details of life outside of his chess achievements. No tournament record or crosstables? That aspect too was just a bit underwhelming. On the plus side, the game selection echoed my memories of his play and they are nicely introduced and annotated. However, I'd agree with you that 30 games seemed insufficient, given the many thousand that he played. And even in the game notes there appears to be a reluctance to delve into personal anecdotes: "I heard many good things about Davy [Bronstein] from my long term friend ...". Sadly, he doesn't then share even one of them. |
