Apr-23-09 | | Dredge Rivers: Has a big rivalry with David Grants. |

 | | perfidious: The shortest loss of my career was to David, in 1978 at Springfield, Mass, in twelve moves. Thought I'd trapped his queen, but it was a case of the trapper trapped! You were a decent man, and it was quite a shock to learn that you passed on only a few weeks after we last met at the 1996 New England Open in Lowell, Mass, though you had been unwell. RIP. |
|
Feb-09-13 | | jerseybob: Are you sure this is one and the same man? I knew of David Lees as U.S. Armed Forces champ, and for years followed a David Lees in the BCM and CHESS, always assuming it was two different people. Why no mention in the bio above of that British connection? |
|
Nov-27-13 | | jerseybob: Tabanus: Following your lead, I just now read an online review of The Chess Games of David Lees, and not a single mention of the "English" Lees. But here's an All-American performance, from the U.S. Armed Forces Chp., Washington, D.C. 1966:
White: Zacharias Chavez Black: D.M. Lees 1.d4,Nf6 2.c4,e6 3.Nf3,d5 4.Nc3,c6 5.Bg5,dc 6.e4,b5 7.e5,h6 8.Bf6?,gf 9.ef,Qf6 10.Be2!?,Nd7 11.00,Bb7 12.Re1,Bb4 13.a4!?,a6 14.ab,cb 15.d5,000! 16.Nd4,Ne5 17.Nf3,Bc3 18.bc,Rd5 19.Qc2,Rg8 20.Kf1,Rg2! 21.Kg2,Nf3 22.Bf3,Rg5ch 23.Kf1,Qf3 24.h4,Rg1ch 0-1 (Annotations: Hans Kmoch, Chess Review April 1966,P.110) |

Nov-28-13
 | | Tabanus: Hmm. I now see there's also an English David Lees, in the Stamford Chess Club, Lincolnshire. Most of the games here are probably by him. |
|
Nov-28-13
 | | Tabanus: I requested games no. 26 & 29 transferred along with the current bio to "David Michael Lees" (1943-1996). The rest is by the English David Lees who's still living, right? |
|
Nov-28-13 | | Nosnibor: <Tabanus> You are correct and I recall David Lees who is originally from Lancashire playing in the Major Open in Leicester in 1960.He played in his first British Championship in 1965 having won the Major Open the previous year.In 1969 he was playing on top board for Lancashire.I beleive he was born in 1938. |
|
Dec-01-13
 | | Tabanus: <Nosnibor> Thanks and the games of David Michael Lees have been removed from here. But I'm unable to identify our English David Lees with certainty (birth). There are about 200 "David Lees" living in England. |
|
Dec-06-13 | | Nosnibor: In the British Championship Rhyl 1969 Lees was paired in round 1 with white against B N Green and lost in 19 moves. The comment in the official tournament bulletin was "It`s a long way from Whitby" Harking back of course to 1964 when Lees won the major open to qualify for this event. |
|
Jul-08-16 | | rkttkr: But there a Scottish David Lees as well - he is much younger, and is in fact the David Lees you allude to who lives (and plays) in Stamford, England.
The Lancashire David Lees has not been active for decades (not sure if he is still alive). |

Jul-08-16
 | | perfidious: In my opinion, the game here with Ballard, played in 1964, belongs to the late American master whom I knew. |
