May-22-05  WorldChampeen: A seemingly rarer Schiller book is on the games of Billy Colias;

"FM Billy Colias was a child prodigy from Munster, Indiana and was one of the brightest Midwest scholastic stars (along with Munster teammate NM Peter Bereolos) in the 80s. FM Colias was afflicted with cancer and later died while in his mid-20s" - http://www.thechessdrum.net/chesscr...

Oct-21-06  whiskeyrebel: I just got a copy of the Colias book. It's a nice tribute. 100 games plus a good deal of biographical information. It's nice to see a guy who clearly devoted his life to chess honored in this way.

R.I.P.

May-14-10  MKalafatas: I played Billy Colias once at a tournament in Indiana a year or two before his untimely death. He was rated higher and had the white pieces but the game ended in a draw. He was much younger than I, but I was struck by his cheerfulness, kindness, and complimentary demeanor.
Feb-02-11  wordfunph: "When I took Billy Colias, a young master who died prematurely in 1993, to Biel in 1985, we were not allowed to deplane at the Bern airport. The police had removed luggage to the tarmac and were surrounding it. One of the bags was ticking. It turned out to be Billy's chess clock. I explained things to the police, who were unamused but realized there was no threat."

- Eric Schiller

Apr-04-12  wordfunph: "I cleaned out Billy's room the week after the funeral. They gave me hundreds of his games. He saved them all. Billy also had signs all over the walls in this room that read "2500". He was going to get to 2500 this year."

- Fred Gruenberg

rest in peace, master Billy Colias..

Apr-05-12  wordfunph: more..

<Because he so loved chess, sometimes his schoolwork would suffer. His mother reports that Billy only passed chemistry in high school because his chemistry teacher was also his chess coach.>

wahaha lol!

Sep-17-15  ASchultz: I remember him going over a game with me in '91. I was just some B-player who got paired up in the first round. I remember a lot of what he said, and he took my moves seriously.

The next round he and my friend who drove me to the tourney played. My friend should've won a pawn but I remember thinking, wait, a 2400 wouldn't have hung a pawn! Colias explained that, yes, he deserved to be losing, as he'd violated a few principles and would've deserved what he got, smiling as much as in my postmortem.

That stayed with me. So did him teaching some c- and d- players how to win with K&2B vs K before the start of the tourney. I forgot I had the book mentioned above but just found it again so I thought I'd add this.

As usual, a good article by Tartajubow.
