ALEXANDER FRITZ
(born Jan-15-1857, died Apr-22-1932, 75 years old) Germany

[what is this?]

Fritz was the son of a pastor. He studied law in Giessen, then worked as a lawyer in Gernsheim and Darmstadt, and eventually as a Privy Counsellor in Alsfeld.

For professional reasons, Fritz rarely took part in chess tournaments. He played his first major tournament in 1877 in Leipzig, where he competed in the main tournament. In 1878 he shared fifth place in the championship tournament with Wilfried Paulsen in Frankfurt am Main. He played further tournaments in 1880 in Wiesbaden (13th place), in the same year in Braunschweig (9th place) as well as the German championships in Nuremberg in 1883, in Frankfurt in 1887, in Breslau in 1889, in Cologne in 1898 and in Düsseldorf in 1908, where he met the strongest players of his time. For example, he won in 1883 against Emil Schallopp and in 1908 against Jacques Mieses.

A variant in the Two Knights game is named after him: After the moves 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Nf6 4.Ng5 d5 5.exd5 the move 5...Nd4 introduces the Fritz variation.

He would often play blindfold simuls as part of a tournament's programme, usually against ten opponents where he would occasionally entertain the guests with singing performances.

Dec-21-04  vonKrolock: From Hessen, Germany, * 1857 , + 1932:
Attended regularly the regional and national Chess Congresses in his country - he was a tenacious adversary and a true gentleman, known also for his habilities as singer and as blindfold simultanist. Sparse data about him in a very thorough web site whith historic accounts here www.ballo.de/westdeutscher_schachbu... and here www.ballo.de/dsb_2__teil.htm in German, if a tranlation is needed, here a free on-line machine http://babelfish.altavista.com/ can give an idea of the contents

cu8sfan: The first version of Fritz (Computer). The results indicate that the technology wasn't yet good enough to compete with the best but they're still strong. (-:
Jun-14-05  Knight13: I don't believe this guy lived for 108 years (or more). The guy who played NN in 1800 must be another A Fritz guy.
Jul-12-05  Knight13: Alexander Fritz was a weak strong player. He played lots of very strong players and lost to them. But he won some, too.
Aug-28-05  A.Alekhine: Is Deep Fritz named after this guy?

Aug-28-05  Rocafella: <Alexander Fritz was a weak strong player> ?:o|?
Aug-28-05  wheelchiar bandit: 1800 to 1908 years covered? was he over 108 years old??
Aug-28-05  Landman: Different people. The full name of the 1800 "A Fritz" was "A Nother Fritz".
Sep-27-05  Eastfrisian: This Alexander Fritz was born on January 15, 1857 in Kirchlotheim and died on April 22, 1932.

He is not well known in Germany.

Feb-16-06  dakgootje: <The full name of the 1800 "A Fritz" was "A Nother Fritz".> Nah that was another one ;-)

Ow and his mom was called 'a mother Fritz'...and his child was called junior -.-

Apr-01-08  Knight13: This guy was a punching bag for the elite players.
Jan-15-10  Knight13: Yo, this guy sucked, dude. Probably was a 1900 rated player if there was a rating. ---

Happy Birthday Mr. Dead-Guy.

http://db.chessmetrics.com/CM2/Play... has him ranked no. 21 in 1879. No patzer then.

Jan-15-10  Knight13: <Tabanus> What the h... Dude, go over his games. He really, really sucks compared to the top players I swear.

Tabanus: Hi <Knight13> it's a question how good these guys were. Perhaps like Don Lippincott's 10.60 vs Usain Bolt's 9.58,

10% weaker? :)

An Englishman: Good Evening: The biography contains an error--the Fritz Variation is 5...Nd4, not 5...Ng4. As a player, he was probably only a weak IM at best, but a weak IM beats over 95% of all chessplayers, and Fritz did score one (lucky) win vs. Steinitz.
