GrahamClayton: Lputian founded the Armenian Chess Academy in 2002, with support from Prime Minister Andranik Margaryan. The Academy has 26 branches in Yerevan and various regions of the country, and receives funding from the state budget.

Honza Cervenka: <An Armenian chessplayer from Armenia, huh?> Well, there are also some Armenian players who are not from Armenia (in fact quite a lot of them as majority of Armenians lives outside of Armenia) and so this sentence can make some sense.

Open Defence: yes.. for example Tigran Petrosyan was born in Tblisi if I am not mistaken...

Honza Cervenka: <for example Tigran Petrosyan was born in Tblisi> Yes and Sergei Movsesian was born in Tbilisi too but it was then at least the same country. Armenians are still quite significant minorities in all neighbouring countries of Caucasus and Middle East and also many Armenians live for many generations completely out of region of their origin around the globe. Of some 8 million of Armenians 5 million live in diaspora.
Jan-04-13  abstract: Mr. Lputian is also known for the very boring variation of the french defence advance - Lputian variation.
Mar-16-13  mira94: Very difficult name.. Smbat Lputian
Aug-09-13  csmath: Many Lputian games are missing, some of theoretical importance.
Mar-12-15  Conrad93: No one has yet mentioned how his name is pronounced.
Mar-13-15  N0B0DY: Why, that's outrageous!
May-23-17  PJs Studio: Regardless of GM Lputian results or perceived strength next to all of you wood pushers, he has always been one of my favorite GM's specifically because when all we had before computers was Informators... I would study the games in lines that I used most frequently and his name would appear in those openings often.

In other words, he and I share the same style and opening repertoire! Keep fighting Smbat!

keypusher: <PJs Studio> I always admired his economic use of vowels.
May-23-17  JimNorCal: I'd like to know how to correctly pronounce Mr L's name also.

keypusher: <PJs Studio> Think I remember seeing this awesome game in Informant back in the day.

Lputian vs Balashov, 1986

Jul-20-17  PJs Studio: I remember that gamekeypusher! Awesome use of open lines and advanced piece placement. He's such an aggressive player like myself. (Albeit ten times as accurate! ;)

Big fan of GM Lputian.

scutigera: <Conrad93>: It's pronounced pretty much the way it's spelled here; there is no easy-for-English-speakers-to-pronounce name that people are hiding from you. Just take it slow at first, and remember that if you can say "Hmm", then you can say "Sm", and if you can say "help", then you can say "Lp". The rest is easy even for us Yankees; if the Japanese can put up with English, then we can put up with Armenian. At least we don't have to try to pronounce "Սմբատ Լպուտյան".
Feb-14-21  Nosnibor: Why did he stop playing when he reached the age of 50 ?
Feb-14-21  realdumptrump: <Nosnibor> Perhaps there's a connection with this appointment(?) ... ?

(Armenia - use google translate)

His Armenian webpage:

And his English webpage has a link to this 2010 interview:

My guess (somewhat uninformed) is that he transitioned fulltime into administrative duties as VP of the Armenian Federation, and voluntarily retired.

Mar-28-22  Besrqe: In the mid 1990's, his wife at the time was attending the University of Houston for a semester or two. He would show up at the Houston Chess Club during this time and I saw him a few times there. Cool, very laid back guy. He would go around to the various games being played for whatever tourney was in progress. I remember him taking an interest in one of my games and sat down to analyze it with me when it was finished. I was 1800 and my opponent was 2200. I could beat this particular opponent on occasion, but this time the game reduced to an ending that I could have handled better. He blazed out variations on the board looking for improvements on my play :)

OhioChessFan: <Awarded the IM title in 1982 and the GM title in 1984, he has occupied a high place in the World rankings since then but has never broken through to the highest levels.>

Very enlightening. High but not the highest.

perfidious: Seems to me that part of the bio mentioned by <ohiyuk> should either be excised or applied to dozens, perhaps hundreds of other very strong players who would beat the spots off, amongst other posters, the likes of your humble narrator.

My preference goes to cutting it.

OhioChessFan: I'm not sure the point of the references to his children, and I see zero point in referencing how many live with him. I'm somewhat inclined to remove the family mentions all together.

HeMateMe: Isn't there a Lputian who is older, put out chess books in the '60s and '70s?
Mar-22-23  fabelhaft: <I see zero point in referencing how many live with him>

Keeping that sort of information updated is also tough :-) It seems to be from some older Wikipedia bio version that was removed long ago to not include the part about how many of his children he lives with.
