GrahamClayton: One of British Columbia's strongest players in the 1940s, he won the BC Championship in 1941, 1942, 1943, and 1946, and on the CFC rating list in 1957 he was second in BC considerably behind Miervaldis Jursevskis but just ahead of Gerry Neufahrt - this at the age of sixty-nine. Duval was born in Lake Megantic, Quebec, served in the First World War (where he rose to the rank of lieutenant and won the Military Cross), and worked as a civil engineer.

Apart from his provincial championship wins, perhaps Duval's most prominent result was his showing in the 1945 Canadian Championship. This was only the second time that BC had representation at a Canadian championship (the first was John Ewing at Hamilton, 1924). Duval finished 5th with a score of 7.5/12 - drawing all of his games against the top four players (Yanofsky, Yerhoff, Divinsky and Belson).
