Apr-19-09  drukenknight: Yeah Covey and me both stopped playing for awhile. He was in my wedding party and got me back into the game in 2000. He is a repertoire player, no matter what opening I play he plays some odd variation that is maybe sound. I open with Spanish he does the Marshall attack. As white he would do that Goring gambit which is so annoying so I went to Sicilian. Or he would do the Cunningham Kings gambit or the Cochrane. So I went to sicilian and he does Smith Morra gambit. So I play French, he plays the albin-chatard attack.

I go d4 he goes Dutch; so I started playing the Staunton gambit. He was working on ALbin Counter Gambit when we stopped

A couple days ago you said that there is no chess club in no. virginia that meets in a church. Now you say you played there. Whatever

James Demery: druken : Is Covey Larry Kaufman? Speaking of Larry Kaufman does anyone know how I can get my rating over 2400?

Ah, well, rhetorical shots about inebriation aside, messing up the factual details makes his eyewitness testimony dubious.

<Speaking of Larry Kaufman does anyone know how I can get my rating over 2400?>

This interview by Jim Eade details Kaufman's early steps:

sisyphus: Regarding the rules for blitz: the game nine years ago in which the disputed draw offer was made was probably played under the World Blitz Chess Association rules. WBCA is no longer with us, but the USCF rules then in effect state that a player may be awarded a draw in Blitz by demonstrating the ability to force a triple occurrence of position to a director.

As in all such matters, the ruling of the tournament director is definitive. People who want to dispute the decision should take it up with the TD, not the player.

Open Defence: aaah so its <Technical Draw>'s fault!! I KNEW IT!!!!!
Apr-19-09  technical draw: Anyone want to take up anything with me should first try the old $20 bill in the hand trick. I make decisions faster that way.

James Demery: Thanks for posting this interview sisyphus.
Apr-19-09  WhiteRook48: no, it's the <Tournament Director>'s fault! Sorry, that means the <Dournament Tirector>
Apr-19-09  drukenknight: It was not a repetition, that much was clear from the talk. Kaufman kept saying he could move his K around and " ...he just keeps checking me."

"Just keeps checking me" is not a draw.
It's simply out of time.

I wonder what factual detail sisph. says I messed up?

ANd you still havent answered my question: Why did you say no club in no. virginia meets in a church when you used to go there?

I really am at a loss. But that's chess players for you.

Aug-02-10  GamerMan: I want to see a Chess and Shogi combined match between Larry Kaufman and Yoshiharu Habu. I am guessing Habu would win, but the matches would be intersting

I have no idea how I ended up reading the discussion on this page, but the question posed is pretty on point.

OhioChessFan: Maybe it's not a club that meets in the church? I'm still working on this mystery.
Oct-19-12  Nightsurfer: There is some <Larry Kaufman>-bashing here that I do not understand. <Larry Kaufman> is a very creative guy - both in chess and in chess-like games. Therefore (rather belatedly, I have to admit!) I would like to say <domo arigato> to <ughaibu> because of his posting dating <Sep-01-03>: <ughaibu> has pointed out to the fact that <Larry Kaufman> "has been the top rated gaijin shogi player for more than twenty years"!

Herewith some additional information on that: <Larry Kaufman> has reached an impressive 2nd place at the <"1st International Shogi Forum Tokyo"> in June 1999, the report in the following: http://www2.teu.ac.jp/gamelab/SHOGI... ; and herewith a historic photo that depicts <Larry Kaufman> (1st row, 2nd from right) during the closing ceremony of the <"1st International Shogi Forum Tokyo 1999">: http://www2.teu.ac.jp/gamelab/SHOGI... :-)

May-08-17  Caissanist: The old link to Kaufman's article <The Evaluation of Material Imbalances> seems to be dead, here's another one: http://www.uschesstrust.org/page/40... .

Jul-05-22  ajile: I have an idea for a new variant. I saw you liked Grand Chess but this is a very VERY complex version of chess. Plus you need a new board with more squares. But what if you simply replaced both King Knights on a REGULAR 64 square board with Cardinals? You only need the 2 extra pieces and the rest of the game remains the same. This would add another layer of complexity but not too complex. As you know the Cardinal combines the movements of Knight and Bishop. It could be called Cardinal Chess.
