 | | Tabanus: http://www.chessarch.com/excavation... copies the Hartford Weekly Times, March 1, 1873: <Turning to our own city we find that Hartford had no chess history prior to 1858, or about the time that Morphy electrified the world by his wonderful achievments. In the chess fever that followed Hartford fell a willing victim. She formed clubs, played matches, and in other ways exhibited symptoms of the disease. At one time there were three flourishing clubs in existence here. The Hartford Chess Club was composed of such players as Erastus Smith, Charles W. Johnson, Fred Perkins, Mayor Robinson, Geo. S. Gilman and others. The Queen's Chess Club was composed of ladies and gentlemen, with Mrs. J. W. Gilbert as the acknowledged best player. Then came the Independent Chess Club, with a roll of forty members - ladies and gentlemen. At that time Hartford and New Haven played a match by telegraph - Messrs. Perkins, Johnson and Wilson being put forward as our champions. Following close upon the heels of these events came the rebellion. The mimic battles on the checkered field gave place to actual warfare, and chess slumbered for a decade. In January, 1871, The Times' chess column was started, and this gave new life to chess in this locality. Since that time the growth of chess has been healthy and steady, until today there is as much interest manifested in the game hereabouts as was shown in the days of Morphy.> Of the players mentioned we find "Mrs. J. W. Gilbert" = Ellen E Strong Gilbert in the database. Her husband was J. W. Gilbert, probably = J W Gilbert if that is not also her. |

<"The Hartford Chess Circle".
About a dozen ladies and gentlemen, interested in chess, met at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Gilbert, No. 21 Capitol avenue, on Friday evening last, to canvass the propriety of having weekly chess gatherings during the winter and spring. It was proposed to take turns in meeting at the houses of the members, so as not to bring the burden of receiving on two or three members. It was also thought best not to have these gatherings at all formal - merely informal meetings of chess players, where no refreshments of any kind would be permitted, and the evenings devoted exclusively to chess, the players to go to the place of meeting equipped with boards and men. The proposition met with universal favor, and on motion it was voted to call the new society "The Hartford Chess Circle".
Mrs. J. W. Gilbert, notwithstanding a vigorous protest, was made president.
The following named ladies and gentlemen were proposed as members of "The Circle", and unanimously voted in:
Miss J. B. Langdon, Miss W. B. Langdon, Mr. and Mrs. Judge Storrs, Mr. and Mrs. George Hebard, Miss Sarah Lyman, Miss Hattie Rowell, Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Barbour, W. B. Johnson, John W.
