<Tim Pellant 1965-1990
NM Tim Pellant of Alhambra, California died December 4, one day after his
25th birthday. Tim was a player with an aggressive, crowd-pleasing style, one who never chose a safe continuation when bold moves were available. He will be missed. Tim crammed some significant accomplishments into his brief chess career. He became a Master at age 17. At the 1983 U.S. Open in Pasadena, he reeled off seven straight wins, the best streak in the tournament. As one of the country's top ten young players, he earned an invitation to the 1984 U.S. Junior Championship. He continued to make progress, pushing his rating over 2350, until his illness prevented him from competing in tournaments. Away from chess, he was a student at Cal State L.A., majoring in broadcast journalism, and the author of an unpublished screenplay. Tim suffered from cystic fibrosis, a congenital disease which he rarely discussed with his chess friends. His death was caused by an infection which his body's defenses, weakened by a double-lung transplant in November, could not repel.> rest in peace, Master Pellant.. |

 | | perfidious: Long ago, I had a roommate who suffered from cystic fibrosis, but who never said a word to me about it. He was a pleasant person, always good to be around in his quiet way. He was also a chess player and I managed to get him to play at the local club. Later, I had an employee who, again, never spoke of her CF, but quietly endured. She married, had a child, but was likewise taken too soon, in her mid thirties, as my ex-roommate had been. |
