nizmo11: Black plays novelty on move 31! [McGowan] , almost like in the famous I A Novikov vs V Tukmakov, 1984.

But then after blitzing his moves up to here, Richter should have had enough time to find that 33.Rg3+ followed by Rook exchange was very strong for example 33.Rg3 Kh6 34.Rxf4! gxf4 35.Rg4 f3 36.Kg3 Bc6 37.Rg5 and Black is eventually getting to zugzwang.

Nov-15-24  Alan McGowan: Richter liked 9.Qd2 in this classical Dragon line (see K Richter vs L Engels, 1937), so it might be expected that he would use it here, too.

It was rare for Kurt Richter to follow any standard opening lines for too long, but this game was an exception.

Richter, as editor of the Deutsche Schachblaetter, published L Engels vs Gilg, 1938, played a few weeks before Bad Harzburg.

His game against Petrov follows the earlier game up to 31.a3, when Black deviated. It's a pity that Richter, as <nimzo11> pointed out, did not find a stronger continuation.
