Apr-05-17  BOSTER: If black takes b3 pawn, this is draw.
Apr-05-17  Marmot PFL: White not only made time control but has the notorious opposite color bishops (36...Bxf3+ was not needed and just gave white an extra move).
Apr-05-17  jerseybob: <BOSTER: If black takes b3 pawn, this is draw.> The way white has slowly drifted into this mess, I wouldn't be so sure!
Apr-05-17  jerseybob: 42. Qd1 looks best
Apr-05-17  BOSTER: Black wants more.
Apr-05-17  nok: didn't expect BxN, White can hold this
Apr-05-17  BOSTER: Black pieces are more active.
Apr-05-17  ChessHigherCat: Qf3 threatening c5 but it looks very drawish. I thought black was going to rip white apart earlier.

tamar: 26...Qe6 and 36...Bxf3 allowed Robson to escape.
Apr-05-17  jerseybob: Gotta hand it to Robson: he's digging down and finding resources.

Richard Taylor: Like all grandmaster games at the "high level" the game has drifted into what looks like may well be a long drawn out draw. Either So has drifted or Robson (Ray Robson sounds like he's a boxer) has defended well...
Apr-05-17  ChemMac: So will win this, I think. I WAS surprised by BXN, but now I think that the opposite-colour bishops in fact give strong attacking chances with the Queens still on the board.
Apr-05-17  ChessHigherCat: If 44...bd4 then Qe7 wins so probably Qd4 with a draw
Apr-05-17  jerseybob: Can white get away with Qxb6?

tamar: Take the draw or go for 46...g5!
Apr-05-17  technical draw: Kamsky wins.
Apr-05-17  ChemMac: What on earth is So doing?

An Englishman: Good Afternoon: Settling for the half-point. Both players have reason to feel that they could have achieved more.

  Domdaniel: Drawing.
Apr-05-17  nok: BxN is the move of a weasel.
Apr-05-17  technical draw: Caruana loses.
Apr-05-17  whiteshark: ... and Zherebukh just has beaten Caruana now tied for 1st-2nd place.
Apr-05-17  jerseybob: <jerseybob: Why not 30.Be4!?> Doesn't work! 30..Bd4+ etc.

tamar: Wesley did not comment on 36...Bxf3 other than that he did not see a win anywhere.

It would not be easy but 36...Bxe7 37 h3 Bf5 38 a4 Kg7 39 Qc1 Bb4 40 h4 Bc5 41 Kh1 Qe7 42 Qd2 f6 43 Kg2 Bc8 44 Ng1 Qe5 45 Nh3 -1.75/40 Stockfish 030916 64

Black gradually pushes back White's pieces with the two bishops, and then exchanges Queens, leaving b3 unguarded.

45...Bf5 46 Bf3 Bb4 47 Qf4 (47 Qc1 Bd6 switches to pressure against King) Bc2 48 Qxe5 fxe5 49 Bc6 Bxb3

tamar: After further review, even granting Stockfish's line, the diagram position might be a draw with perfect play by White making a fortress.

Winning the b pawn might not be enough.
