Kibitzer's Corner
Mar-15-16  Fanques Fair: Carlsen would never, never fail to win a game like this. Bad performance by both players. Topalov first had a chance do fight for the initiative with 36-g5, or even before. Then he blundered and had a totally lost position. Caruana´s failure to exploit this means that he yet would have no chance to beat Magnus.
Mar-15-16  SirRuthless: A ridiculous comment. Carlsen had total domination vs. Topalov in Norway Chess just last year , blundered from nowhere and lost. This game says nothing about how either player would fare against the world champ. You can't extrapolate that match from a single game between two other players. It's chess. It's a fight. Things happen.

That being said, Caruana will be disappointed not to have converted his chances. Topalov seems to be the player who struggles the most when he has to sit and defend passively but as soon as he got some counterplay he was Houdini. This draw will keep him motivated to fight and I have a feeling he will have a powerful hand in deciding the event much like Ivanchuk in 2013..

Mar-15-16  GiuocoPianoMan: With my screen name, Im just thrilled that the Giuoco is being played at this level again. Magnus won a game with it at Tata Steel this year- although granted it was against Michael Adams....
Mar-15-16  Fanques Fair: In a match, in a game with this level of importance, after a rest day, it´s unexcusable do fail to win such an endgame. Sorry, Caruana is not yet mature enough for really fighting for the champínonship.
Mar-15-16  maxxowar: Caruana should try
41. Rxf6 Qxf6 42. Rb2 e4 43. Re2 e3 44. f3 to keep the advantage.
Mar-15-16  Marmot PFL: Speaking of Carlsen this game followed Carlsen vs Adams, 2016 until move 14, when Topalov varied and got a decent position.

Caruana builds up some pressure, and instead of playing 37...Bxe4 with material equality Topalov decides to give up a pawn for activity. This pays off on move 41 when Caruana allows 41...Rxf2 and the black passed pawn becomes dangerous.

Mar-15-16  Fanques Fair: Even after 41-... Rxf2, 42-Rxg6, Rf1+, 43-Kh2, Qxc8, 43-Qxc8, Rxc8, 44-Rc6, Re8 there were several winning lines.

Penguincw: Damn, Caruana missed the chance to play spoiler vs. Topalov on his birthday. Topalov might be able to return the favour this year if both are playing in Bilbao...
Mar-16-16  Ulhumbrus: With 24...c5 Topalov plays the move which Svidler advised in the game Carlsen vs Anand, 2014

Instead of 33...Ref7, 33...Qd8 begins the plan of ...Qd8-e8-g6 placing the queen on g6

Instead of 34...fxe4, 34...Rf6 begins the plan of ...g5 and ...Qg7 placing the queen on g7 as in the game Larsen vs Fischer, 1971
