bright1: Move 14 with White to play would make a good puzzle

Jonathan Sarfati: Black went after White's Pd4, but neglected his development and castling to do so. White's refutation was stunning: ignores the attack on the ♘ with 14. d5!, then ignores the attack on his ♕ with 15.dxe6!, to open the centre files.

If 15...♗xd1 16.exf7+ ♔d7
[16...♔d8 17.♖e8+ ♔d7 18.♗e6#]
17.♖axd1+ ♗d6 18.♖xd6+ ♔c7 19.♖xh6+ ♕xf4 20.♖xh8 and White gets a new ♕ with big material advantage.

Even stronger was 17.♗g3 first, because if 17... ♕xc4 then 18.♖xe7+ ♔xe7 19.♕d6+ ♔e8 20.♖e1.

Doesn't matter though—even after 17. ♗d6, Black's best is going a clear exchange down with 17...O-O 18.♗xe7 ♕xc4 19.♗xf8. Black chose instead to try to get enough for the ♕, but his pieces were uncoordinated and his ♔ exposed. White regained one piece with 20. ♕d4, and the remaining ones could not defend the ♔ against White's active ♕+♖.

Indeed so and maybe one for the weekend.

Later, if Black tries to seek refuge with 17...O-O then after 18. Bxe7 Qxc4 19. Bxf8 he can't recapture because of the back rank mate.

Excellent game. Much better than the pun, which is fine by me.

FSR: Shocking! White looks busted after 13...Bg6.

<goodevans: . . . Excellent game. Much better than the pun, which is fine by me.>

I agree on both counts.

perfidious: While the pun is hardly of surpassing originality, nor could it be, the game is a combinative tour de force; lovely stuff.

MissScarlett: I was forced to cancel the Twelve Days of Christmas at the halfway point, through lack of effective material.

No offence, but you people are DESPICABLE!

Dec-27-22  Messiah: Terrible pun, great game.

keypusher: Wonderful game, thanks for sharing, <GrahamClayton>. I enjoyed playing <Guess the Move> with it (though I did not do too well). White's 14th and 15th moves are really something.

The more circumspect 10....Bd6 would have transposed to Tal vs Botvinnik, 1960 (and a lot of other games).

Dec-27-22  goodevans: <MissScarlett: I was forced to cancel the Twelve Days of Christmas at the halfway point...>

What a great idea, although folk around my way don't seem to have got the message yet. Still got fairy lights and Christmas trees up and I'm still having to listen to every Christmas number one from the last 60-odd years... (bah, humbug).

Dec-27-22  TheTamale: According to Engine, Black's 10th move, which is the kind of move I make, was the clunker, sending things from a -0.60 to a +1.89. I supposed he was hoping for 11) Nxd5, which would have returned the advantage to him.

  keypusher: Incidentally White's position is so strong that, as SF confirms, even 13.Bxe6 works, e.g. 13....fe 14.Rxe6+ Kd7 15.d5 (or 15.Qf3 Kxe6 16.Qb3+ Ke7 17.Qxb7+) Qxf4 16.dxc6+ Kxe6 17.cxb7 Bc5 18.Qe2+ Be4 19.Nxe4 Nc6 20.Nxc5+ Kd8 21.bxa8/Q Rxa8 22.Qb5, etc. But that line is a little inhuman.
