Kibitzer's Corner
Mar-14-14  jerseybob: Ten years after this game, in the 1963 World Chp. Match, Petrosian played 8.d5 and after 8..e6?! 9.de beat Botvinnik in a classic ending. I'm not sure if that move was known in '53; if so would Golombek have played it? At this point in his series vs. Smyslov, trailing 0-3, he seems to have been after a draw. For that purpose, 9.Qd4 might've been best.
Mar-15-14  Petrosianic: You're not sure if which move was known? d5 or e6?

A lot of times in the opening, a move is "known" but not properly appreciated until some top player puts it on the map. For instance, the Poisoned Pawn Variation was "known" long before Fischer. But Fischer was the one who really established it as a playable defense for Black.

Mar-15-14  jerseybob: Petrosianic:The move I meant was 8.d5 for white. I've got a feeling black can survive that move, but Botvinnik got careless with 8..e6, probably underestimating Petrosian, who up till that point in the match was looking utterly unimpressive.
