Feb-25-09 | | Mulyahnto: Carlsen missed a few good chances before finding 59. h7! |
Feb-25-09 | | chessmoron: WOW! This is the first time Carlsen beat Anand in standard time control. |
Feb-25-09 | | Udit Narayan: The passing of the torch... |
Feb-25-09 | | AdrianP: What a game! |
Feb-25-09 | | hardliner: This win was important for Carlsen, braking the last psychological barrier. After a long row of mostly solid, but draw games, this game might be the first of a new era. |
Feb-25-09 | | beenthere240: Anand misses 77...Ne5! 78. Kxd2 Nf3+!, drawing. Of course, Carlsen might have found a way to avoid this clever ploy. ;-) |
Feb-25-09 | | Kaspablanca: if 77..Ne5. 78.Rd4+ capturing the pawn. Anand`s mistake was 44...f6. |
Feb-25-09 | | Mulyahnto: Kd5 was not played. Anand resigned after Rh4. Officials like to move the king to the center of the board after a game is finished. <Anand misses 77...Ne5! 78. Kxd2 Nf3+!> Of course Carlsen would not have played Kxd2, however 77...Ne5 should have been played regardless of the potential fork. It's the best move at this point, although it's a forced win for white anyway. |
Feb-25-09 | | mrbasso: Carlsen missed 46.exf6/47.Bxd5+,still got the full point. 47...Re1+ 48.Kf3 (48.Kd3 is slightly better, probably draw)
Rf1+ 49.Kg4 Rg1+ 50.Kh3 Ng5+ with perpetual.
I never thought Anand is particulary good in defence.
In fact he cracks quite often under pressure.

Feb-25-09 | | firefly3: Any opinions on what were the ! or !! moves in this game? |
Feb-25-09 | | percyblakeney: Even though 57. ... Nf3 was a losing mistake that wasn't all that easy to see, so at least the winning 58. h6 ought to be given an exclamation mark. |
Feb-25-09 | | percyblakeney: Rogozenko picked 59. h7 for the exclamation mark instead of h6, and also gave one to Carlsen's 31st, 36th, 39th, 60th and 61st: http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail... |
Feb-25-09 | | Phoenix: The sky's the limit now. |
Feb-25-09 | | checklicious: The worm turns. Carlsen has been unlucky not to win against Anand on several occasions in the past. Bit of luck here but it took great skill and vision to exploit Anand's error. GG. |
Feb-25-09 | | solskytz: Attention! 77...Nd5 78. Rd4+ captures the pawn just how? Probably not on the next move (although his position is still winning) as Kc6 79. Rxd2 Kb5 with Nc6 will lead to a position where white will be hard pressed to win, although he has R+P against N |
Feb-25-09 | | Manic: <solskytz> How so? After 79.Rxd2 Kb5 80.Kb3 it should not be too hard for white to push black's king back. 80...Nc6 Rd5+ |
Feb-25-09 | | solskytz: Yes... an optical illusion of both pieces attacking the pawn and no regards to the excessive liberty of the white rook. |
Feb-25-09 | | you vs yourself: 29..a6 might've saved Anand. But there would be no losses if players find best moves all the time. Great game by Carlsen. I'm sure he'd win more against Anand. |
Feb-25-09 | | kb2ct: It was difficult to see that Anand was in zugswang.
I would have played differently to make it more obvious. :0) |
Feb-25-09 | | chaq: <beenthere240>, <solskytz>, <Manic> 77...Ne5 78.Rd4+ Kc6 79.Rxd2 Kb5 80.Rd5+ Kxb4 81.Rxe5 1-0 |
Feb-25-09 | | Mulyahnto: <But there would be no losses if players find best moves all the time.> Does that mean we'd have *solved* chess? That the perfectly played game is always a draw? |
Feb-26-09 | | notyetagm: Great game by Carlsen! |
Feb-26-09 | | notyetagm: <Mulyahnto: Carlsen missed a few good chances before finding 59. h7!> Great shot.
Feb-26-09 | | Ishaan: I don't want to think that Anand is again trying to "hide" his preparation for his title defense against Topalov or Kamsky. I loved Kasparov's approach, no matter what the tournament was, he was just amazingly invincible! |
Feb-26-09 | | Kasparov Fan01: Kasparov was stronger than Anand, and tougher mentally. It seems that Anand can't handle the title of world champ, thats ok, Topalov will gladly take it from him. Kasparov as Topalov puts it was a "Killer". |
