perfidious: And if that myth of invincibility is shattered when <Our Boy> loses a game, what then? Bet the crying towel will be out in force!

'Course, you keep playing in 'Chocolate Milk' type events which even I could play after ten years away, they'll do plenty for your ego, if not your playing strength.

It's odds-on you couldn't stay away for ten years and play well at all, because you haven't enough positional understanding of the game. How do I know? I've actually played through most, if not all, these games you present here. Your command of tactics is very good for the most part, but positional play?

Come to my page sometime and have a go. While some of my games are hardly what one would call great, I'm not much for BS, either, and don't need to dress them up with the sort of phony crap you pass off all over the shop. I'm interested in objectivity and improvement -if I ever play again-not self-deification.

LIFE Master AJ: <perp> As I said, you are a HAS-BEEN!!

I certainly would not waste my time on your games. I study daily, and usually gravitate towards GM games in an opening line that I might be working on.

Go to a OTB (rated) tournament. Actually PLAY again! Then I might be interested in your games. But certainly not now.

Sep-20-11  Robed.Bishop: AJ - So how do your facts contradict KKDEREK? Is it because he said 2200 and you're supposedly at 2230? If so, really?

LIFE Master AJ: Now HERE's an idea!

Got to the playing zone - for this site. (The link is near the bottom of my header.)

Let me thrash you in a few games of three minute, then we will see how busy your mouth is afterwards ...

Sep-20-11  Colonel Mortimer: <perfidious:> <Your command of tactics is very good for the most part, but positional play?>

Totally agree with that. <LIFE Master AJ> might have a future teaching kids how to fork and pin pieces but beyond 1800 ratings his positional understanding is as good as a cart before a horse.

LIFE Master AJ: (12:58 AM) I am in the playing zone ... and I am waiting ... any takers? Anyone?
Sep-20-11  SimonWebbsTiger: So what if <perfidious> quit active chess, I say. Bit of a loss, for sure; in Denmark we have seen a steep decline in the number of active players. People stopping is as well known from amateur to world champion level. People's lives and personal choices isn't it?

Which links to these observations.

Two very talented Danish juniors, one of whom gained the GM title, quit chess in their 20s and only play poker now. That's a great shame from the egotistical view of wishing guys like them in the Federation - the more chess players, the merrier! - and representing Denmark. <perfidious> plays poker these days too, so his choice isn't unique.

I have long held the view that really good chess players, those who put the time and effort into studying the fundamentals of strategy and endgame technique plus technical (book) positions, don't lose their class if they have a lay-off from chess. They will just be tremendously rusty when they play again because they haven't followed any latest opening theory and because chess thinking is easier with regular tournament play.

LIFE Master AJ: <kkidiot> Ignore the spike on the right end of the graph ...
Sep-20-11  Colonel Mortimer: <KKDEREK:> <Do you guys saw how many times his graphics <blasts> on 2200?? bang!!! On the floor!!!>

That's why he is so agitated about his recent win - it's just a zombie arm breaking through the earthen grave of his rating floor.

How about popping into the playing zone for a game?

LIFE Master AJ: <I Play The Fred> BTW, someone - a certain lady - sent me an e-mail, she always seems to be trying to mend fences.

If you want, (and are willing to jump off the "bash A.J. bandwagon); I would happily take you off ignore.

Sep-20-11  JoergWalter: Warning: THIS MESSAGE DESTROYS ITSELF WITHIN 5 MINUTES!

For everyone preparing for a match with <LMAJ>. However, divine ordinance must have prevented <LMAJ> to climb the top.

<I have met hundreds of Grand-Masters over the years. Literally. I usually harangue the poor fellows, and pester them with zillions of questions. One of the questions I always ask is usually, "If I were to read one chess book, which one would you recommend?" Nine times out of ten, the answer is, "Read Nimzovich's, 'My System.'" One of my students recently presented me with a copy of this book, thinking I was not familiar with it. (Of course I had read it over 25 years ago!) I went through it again. Like all the GM's have told me, this book will make a MUCH BETTER player out of you! Its made Category I players into Masters, and turned Masters into GM's. One of the very often over-looked facts is that this book will teach you the FUNDAMENTALS of STRATEGY and PLANNING!! Get it. I can guarantee if you will spend just a little time with it, you will not be sorry>

LIFE Master AJ: <Sep-02-11 <kkdogg:> I read this page from beginning to end. The page started with an interesting battle between 2200+ players-- a daring sacrifice that led to an all-out attack, followed by an unusual material imbalance. Several posters commented on how much they enjoyed the game, with several comments by AJ about the game.

<Then Dr. Mal came in, pointed out inaccuracies, and said, "Terrible play, no idea what white's rating was but it seemed like someone around maybe ELO 1000 (hard to guess that low)".

<What was the purpose of this comment? Why make it? First, one of the players of this game had posted on the page, so this comment was clearly an unnecessary and unprovoked attack on A.J. It's purpose was to insult.

<Second, the comment was inane. The game clearly was not played by someone with an ELO of 1000.

<Third, Dr. Mal and his ilk did not back down from the comment when he was proven wrong. White was a 2300, and these folks (almost) never play like 1500s, even if they are drunk. The game was featured in a GM's column, who usually do not publish games by 1000 ELO chess newbie's.

<Fourth, it's fine to point out inaccuracies and suggest improvements, but why bother commenting on the conjectured ELO of the opponents at all?

<Fifth, AJ asked for proof of Dr. Mal's expertise. Usually I am not a fan of this, and a 1000 ELO has as much a right to criticize moves and suggest lines as anyone else. But here, AJ had a point. If Dr Mal wanted to say a 2300 player should have played f4, he can back that up with analysis. But if he wanted to say a 2300 player played like a 1000 player, he damned well better be a 2300 player himself. Anyone can run a computer to find inaccuracies, but judging rating strength involves understanding the ideas behind the moves. If Dr Mal cannot do that, he should not judge. He has a right to be anonymous, but if he wishes to assert it, do not conjecture on the ELO-quality of play of expert players.

<Then, predictably, AJ overreacts, the "moral crusaders" all have to come and take their swing at the pinata while slapping each other on the back, and then justify their repugnant behavior by referencing comments that AJ made in the past.

I don't know about the site's "history", but I know who the bad guys in this thread were.>>>>>>>>

Sep-20-11  I play the Fred: <AJ> I won't explain myself now; too long, too late in the day.

But I'll say this much: if I see something I disagree with and I feel strongly enough about it, I'm going to say so. That doesn't mean I'm going to be snarky or excessively confrontational about it. What's more, disagreement on one issue means nothing WRT another issue, as I recently demonstrated with regard to the <bib comment>.

I'm not <for> you or <against> you, <AJ>. I'm just here to shoot the breeze and have fun.

FSR: <perfidious> <I play the Fred> As have I. I told Lennonfan to put up or shut up with his incessant, unsupported claims that AJ had published a position of his without attribution. I also stated that bamaexpert's claim that AJ had unfairly induced him to give up in a drawn position didn't make sense to me. And for that matter I agreed with you (I play the Fred) that the Colonel's remark about AJ was out of line and was appropriately deleted by the admins - while admitting that I found it funny.

I've never observed and have a hard time imagining AJ defending one of his detractors against unfair criticism. Nor, of course, has he ever retracted or apologized for his outrageous lies about me or his ridiculous suggestion that Nakamura cheated against him. He's way too self-centered to consider anyone else's feelings.

LIFE Master AJ: <PMS> I would suggest that you also get a new hobby ... AND a life to go with it.
Sep-20-11  technical draw: Ratings are just a mathematical expression that gives you an idea of a players strength. The purpose of a rating floor is to maintain that idea of playing strength. A 2400 player can start losing games to fall below 2200 and then enter a "below 2200" group and make a killing. The rating floor prevents (or tries to prevent) this. The fact that someone continually hits the rating floor is probably insignificant.
Sep-20-11  SimonWebbsTiger: hate to stalemate you <Dechinical Draw> <Ratings are just a mathematical expression that gives you an idea of a players strength>

NO! Form, not strength

Sep-20-11  technical draw: <SimonWebbsTiger> <NO! Form, not strength> Indeed I struggled with "strength" however I don't think "form" quite defines it either. So I'll coin the word "Frenght"...
