Oct-12-05  Averageguy: Well played Benzol! What's your rating?

Benzol: <Averageguy> My national rating is only about 1650. In some games, however, I have managed to trouble players whose rating is well above my own. Roger Perry has played in the New Zealand Championship and is rated about 1900. Although he didn't remember when we talked after this game this was the second time we played each other. Our first meeting was in a telegraphic match(!) in 1973 between Auckland and Christchurch so we didn't see each other face to face. I managed to win on that occassion as well but we were both only 12 years old at the time. Roger has some other games in the database see Roger L Perry. His victory over Peter Stuart I thought was quite good.
Oct-12-05  Averageguy: If you drew a 2500 player in our other game then I think you are quite underrated.
Feb-12-06  Joao Quintas Godinho: White played a bad Opening.
Apr-18-06  DeepBlade: <joao-whatever> White played the French Advance Main Line, with the smart pawnstucture, go see till move 9. Althou I prefer 9.Be2 w/ O-O or 9.Nc3 w/ Bb2 Rc1, Perry's preference loses to the move Morten played. It makes the White kingside very vulnerable after the exchange, also demolishes the pawnstructure, and Black did regroup his forces good, and played solid. As Black you might want to try the f6 gambit, prefered by crafty

1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. e5 c5 4. Nf3 Ne7 5. c3 Nf5 6. a3 Be7 7. b4 cxd4 8. cxd4 O-O 9. Nc3 a5 10. b5 Qc7 11. Bb2 <f6> 12. a4 Bb4 13. Rc1 fxe5

Jul-20-06  Far1ey: Nice game again!!! You are very very underated...

<Joao Quintas Godinho> What was wrong with the opening???

Benzol: <Far1ey> There seems to be a lot of interest in my games all of a sudden. Yes, I'm quite fond of the French. Influence from playing through Capablanca and (particularly) Botvinnik games I think.

:)

Sep-07-06  Joao Quintas Godinho: The white pawn structure is very weak and after castel white king is very expose... Black has advantadge in the 13 play which is very unusual ( white had the iniciative, so loose so many things in so litle plays is pretty bad...)
Nov-03-06  Far1ey: <Joao> I'd like to see you do better. How about it then Benzol vs Joao bet you $100 Benzol beats the patzer

Richard Taylor: Good game Paul - Perry is a tough nut...

You looked possibly winning at the end...?

Benzol: <Richard> Thanks. One thing that did worry me at the time was that dispite the pawn deficit Roger could still draw with the bishops being opposite colours. However, Ewen told me that the game is a definite win for Black and I trust his judgement.

:)

Apr-11-09  Alphastar: Nicely played Paul!
Jan-17-11  Lennonfan: I like this game..its one of my favourite defences as black the french, and i thought you played rather well.....i see your ratings only 1650(6yr ago!)and my "estimated" ratings higher, but i think you'd trouble me mr benzol...who was the 2500 rated player you drew with who<averageguy>refered to?

Richard Taylor: Paul I beat Perry this year in one game but lost to his c3 Sicilian - not because of the opening...before that I lost a few years ago against his Dragon then I draw using a Nimzo...so aprox = he is very booked...

He is a big shot in Finance (he has PhD) and sometimes advises the Government on money etc or talks on TV...but he is a very nice chap.

He plays mean Dragon and nearly got Richard Stuart with his "Chinese Dragon" !! Lol!! It was an exciting and epic battle...I must upload that up here one day

Benzol: The game <Averageguy> alluded to was this one D Sermek vs P Morten, 2003 and it was my first encounter with a GM even if it was only a simil game.
