Jan-02-05 | | MatrixManNe0: Beg pardon, be3292... I wonder why you were really trying to be so cutting when there are people more interested in another line than yours aforementioned. In any case, I suppose I could try to piece those two moves out. 41... Bd3 prevents 42. Qxb4, where white wins yet another piece (the knight and bishop must be forked by the queen). 42. a3 would be a discovery tactic, where 42...bxa3 would be met by 43. Qxc3, picking off the knight, attacking the bishop, and winning the two a-pawns. By playing a3 instead of Qxb4, White retains a small tempo advantage, but this is all frivolous, as white is in a winning position at this point of time anyway. Besides, you being here since August of last year should make you rather well seasoned in the proper etiquette of these kibitzes. |

Jan-03-05 | | patzer2: be3292, sorry I missed your questions. If I understand correctly, your first question seems to be why not play 42. Qxb4? This move does win, but 42. a3 is also a good alternative. So my answer is that in an easily won position it is a matter of preference. As to the second question, about the significance of 41...Bd3, my answer is it doesn't appear to have much if any significance. Black is clearly lost and at this point 41...Bd3 seems to be just pushing wood on momentum. |

White to play 20.?
White has a Knight for 3 pawns.
Both Knights can sit on e4 square which is the attacking square to the Black Queen: 20.Nce4 dxe4
21.Nxe4 Qc7
22.Ng5
<if...Bxb2 23.Qxe6+ Kh8 24.Nf7+ Kg8 25.Nh6++ Kh8 26.Qg8#> Black may choose to let go of his Queen.:
22............Bxb2
23.Qxe6+ Kh8
24.Nf7+ Qxf7
25.Qxf7
<if...Bxa1 Qf8#>
25...........Ba3
26.Bxc6 Nd6
27.Qf4
Game takes longer but White is the winner on grounds of stronger materials. time to check

Nov-17-13 | | agb2002: White has a knight for three pawns.
Black threatens ... Nc7 and ... b4.
The weak pawn on e6 suggests 20.Re1 Bxc3 21.Bxc3:
A) 21... Nc7 22.Be5 Qd7 (22... b4 23.Bxd6 Bxe2 24.Bxc7 + - [B+N vs 2P]) 23.Bxc7 Qxc7 24.Qxe6+ Qf7 (24... Kh8 25.Qe8+ Rxe8 26.Rxe8#; 24... Kf8 25.Rf1+ Qf7 26.Qxf7#) 25.Qxc6 A.1) 25... Bb7 26.Qxb5 Qf2 27.Qe2 + - [N].
A.2) 25... Rd8 26.Qxa6 Qf2 27.Bxd5+ Kh8 (27... Rxd5 28.Qc8+ Kf7 (28... Qf8 29.Re8) 29.Qe8+ Kf6 30.Qf8+ and 31.Qxf2) 28.Qe6 + - [B+N]. B) 21... Bc8 22.Bh3
B.1) 22... Nc7 23.Be5 Qe7 24.Bxc7 Qxc7 25.Bxe6+ Bxe6 (25... Kh8 26.Bxd5; 25... Kf8 26.Qf2+ Ke7(8) 27.Bxc8+) 26.Qxe6+ Qf7 (26... Kf8 27.Rf1+; 26... Kh8 27.Qe8+) 27.Qxc6 + - [N vs P]. B.2) 22... Kf7 23.Nf3 h6 24.Ne5+ followed by Qh5 looks very bad for Black. For example, 24... Kg8 25.Qh5 Nf6 26.Qf7+ Kh7 (26... Kh8 27.Qxf6 gxf6 28.Nf7+ Kg7 29.Nxd6 Bd7 30.Bxe6, etc.) 27.Ng4 wins. B.3) 22... e5 23.Bxe5 Qe7 24.Bg2 + -, followed by Nf3, Nd4, etc. C) 21... Kf7 22.Bh3 looks similar to previous lines.
D) 21... d4 22.Ne4 Qd8 (22... Qd5 23.Nf6+; 22... Qd7 23.Nc5 Qd6 24.Bxd4 Qxd4 25.Qxe6+ Kf8 (25... Kh8 26.Qxe8+) 26.Nd7+) 23.Ng5 Qxg5 (23... dxc3 24.Qxe6+, etc.) 24.Qxe6+ Kf8 25.Bb4+ c5 26.Bd5 wins. |
|
Nov-17-13 | | agb2002: I saw the first two moves but missed 22.Ng5 which I mention in my line D. I would probably have seen it if I had reconsidered 20.Nce4 after analyzing 20.Re1. Stockfish evaluates 20.Re1 at about +1.6 after few minutes, perhaps enough to win. |
|
Nov-17-13 | | morfishine: I started with the other Knight <20.Nde4> but came up short playing 22.Nc5 and overlooking a Black defense based on Bc8 and Be6, which only nets a pawn after giving the piece back :( *****
PM: Of course, the GM is much more accurate :)

Nov-17-13 | | Marmot PFL: Did not find the combination, which was pretty deep. I would be happy to play white after 20 Re1 so I probably wouldn't look that long anyway. |

Nov-17-13 | | Patriot: White has a piece for three pawns.
20.Nxb5 Bxb5 21.Qxe5 Qxe5 22.Bxe5 leaves white slightly ahead. I'm not sure what else there is. Another candidate was 20.Nce4 dxe4 21.Nxe4 Qc7 but I'm not sure what this accomplishes. There are a few more candidates I considered but 20.Nxb5 is the best I could find. |
