Oct-03-04  clocked: After the disappointing loss in the 1st round to Bareev Morozevich vs Bareev, 2002, Morozevich is here (in the last round) in a must win situation. Morozevich achieves a winning position but it all slips away in time trouble.

34...Nxg2! "And I was ready to shake his hand," - Bareev

36...Kg7? (Qb3!)

Oct-03-04  Kean: Some time before, when I was a begginer, more than Im today, I thinked of Bareev as a second level master, not a genius, insipid, but then I gradually started to realize the well prepared, talented master he really is. He could maybe not play like Moro or Shirov, but he knows what he does and can beat anyone, and I continue to understand his play.
Sep-29-08  Poisonpawns: Here Morozevich loses a totally won position, which i havent seen too often. When I say Won,I mean totally Won.
Nov-23-08  engineerX: I think after this game Morozevich said that he would retire from professional chess. He left the playing hall immediately and wanted to leave Dortmund as well. Someone told him "what about your things?" and he replied "throw them away, they are bad luck!".

  plang: Bareev described his 8 d5?! as "a little idiotic". In Romanishin-Lobron St Vincent 2000(game not included in this database)Black had tried 10..Bd7 and White had gone on to win; 10..Na6 was new. Bareev was not in time pressure when he played 29 Bf1?; of course 29 Qxb7 would have been better. Instead of Morozovich's 36..Kg7? several sources offer the computer suggestion of 36..Qb3; Morozovich suggested the more human 36..36..a5 37 Qc3 (37 Qa5?..Nf3+ 38 Kg2..Qg1+ 39 Kxf3..Qh1+ 40 Kg4..Qe4+ 41 Rf4..f5+) 37..a4 38 Rf4..Nd3 39 Rd4..Qe2 40 Rd3..Qxf2+ 41 Kh1..Qf1+ 42 Kh2..Re8 and wins.

A win by Morozovich would have left him in a tie with Bareev for the 4th semi-final spot in the Candidates. This was as close as Morozovich eever got to competing for the title (it was also as close as Bareev ever got as he was eliminated by Topalov in the semi-finals).
