Dec-10-08  Alphastar: excellent game. Happy birthday chessgames.com :)
Dec-10-08  withingrace: great game, with a good mate.

if pawn takes.

28. gxh5 29. Qg5+ (1) Kh8 30. Qxh6+ Kg8 31. Qh7+ Kf8 31. Qh8# or (2) 29... Kf8 30. Qxh6+ Kg8 31. Qh7+ Kf8 31. Qh8#

1. if pawn doesn't take h5, Kh7.

28... Kh7 29. Nf6 (1) Kh8 30. Qxh6# or (2) 29... Kg7 30. Nxd7 (white advantage)

2. if pawns doesn't take h5, Kg6

28... Kg8 29. Qxh6 (1) gxh5 30. Qh7+ Kf8 31. Qh8# or (2) 29... f5 30. Nf6+ Kf7 31. Nxd7 (avatage white. 31... Rxd7 32. Rxf5 leads to some interesting possibilities)

3. and finally, if pawns doesn't take h5, Kf8

28... Kf8 29. Qxh6+ Kg8 30. Qg7#

happy birthday and my warmest regards chess games

Dec-10-08  DoubleCheck: 28. Nh5+!!

What an awesome move
If the black king goes on any light sqaures then Nf6+ forks to win queen

If the black king moves on dark square then Qxh6+ becomes possible with mate next move

More importantly if black takes the knight with gxh5? then its mate in four with

28. Nxh5+!! gxh5?

29. Qg5+! Kh8(Kf8)
30. Qxh6+ Kg8
31. Qh7+ Kf8
32. Qh8+ mate

I believe blacks 19...Qd7 was the sealed move as it achieves nothing

If black played passively
19...a6 he might of stood a better chance

19...a6!?
20. Ng3 b5
21. b4 a5!
22. Qd2 axb4
23. axb4 Ra7 (aiming for ...Ra4)
24. Bc2 Rea8
and now the position has black controlling a-file

Dec-10-08  withingrace: i forgot a very important line in varation 2.

29... Kg8 30. Qxh6 f5 31. Nf6+ Kf7 32. Qh5 Ke6 33. Qxg6 (1) Rg7 34. Bxf5+ Ke7 35 Qxg7+ (1a) Kd8 36 Qxd7# (1b) 35... Bf7 36. Bxd7 (advantage white) or (2) 33... Qc7 34. Bf5# or (3) 33... Rf7 34. Qxf5+ Ke7 35. Qxd7+ Kf8 36. Qxf8+ Kg7 37. Qg8+ Kh6 38. Qg6#

Dec-10-08  mihai: Happy Birthday ChessGames, and many returns!

Dec-10-08  IT4L1CO: Happy birthday!
At my 7th birthday I broke my arm (not kidding), i'm happy to see that Artidiello didn't hurt himself with 7 Nxd5 Nxd5! 8 Bxd8 Bb4+ ...
Dec-10-08  lefthandsketch: happy birthday- it's mine today too actually!
Dec-11-08  patzer of patzers: <lefthandsketch> birthdays seem to pop up everywhere...someone at my school had a birthday too...

As I predicted in my last post (well, I was only half right--I looked at other people's explanations), chessgames helped me understand this game, like so many others. Now I see that Nxh5+ is pure awesomeness. Impressive ending!

Dec-11-08  jovack: white plays with purpose, sitting up his pieces to exploits black's weaknesses (square colours, piece positions etc) and black sets up a meaningless defense that would suffice in any trade for trade game
