Jan-19-09  WhiteRook48: interesting draw.

9. g3 Allows ...Ng2+ and ...Nxe3, so this can't be good.

9. Kf1 looks like it's asking for trouble, because black already has the f file opened against the king.

All in all, I think 9. Rh2 is the best move.

MissScarlett: As can be seen from Game Collection: 2 Morphy vs Stanley Odds Match ( Pawn and a Move, only one game appeared at the time. I don't know what, if anything, Lawson revealed about his sources when he unearthed the other two games, in 1950 and 1976, respectively.

<By 1857, the year of the First American Chess Congress, Stanley was considered the U. S. Champion but he was also quite destitute as a result of his drinking problem. Paul Morphy won the tournament effortlessly and after the tournament beat Stanley +4-1 [sic] in a casual match while giving Stanley the odds of "pawn and the move." There was no doubt that there was a new U. S. Champion. Morphy, knowing the Stanley family's dire straits, gave his winnings to Mrs. Stanley, claiming he couldn't give it to Charles because "he would have drunk it all up.">

A satisfying explanation would be that Morphy withheld publication of the games when it became evident that Stanley's standard of play was woefully poor.
