May-26-05 | | InspiredByMorphy: Whites last chance to castle was the 17th move. Its interesting to note how perhaps because Morphy gave f-pawn odds in this game, his opponent couldnt resist bringing the queen out early. It did more harm for white than good, allowing black to develop swiftly. |

May-26-05 | | Calli: You're right, 17.0-0 is best, but he could still play 18.0-0! and be winning. |

Jan-19-09 | | WhiteRook48: Yikes!! Morphy makes giving odds look like a forced win for him. |

Aug-22-21 | | Messiah: Shouldn't the PGN start with move 1, regardless of being an unorthodox game? |
|
Aug-22-21 | | Messiah: The malformed PGN has a hilarious side effect:
<Requested 2021-08-22 10:37:22.
6.0 second/move evaluation. (04:18:29 elapsed)> Probably I will leave it this way for a few days, just for the laughs. |

Aug-22-21 | | Z4all: <<Messiah> Shouldn't the PGN start with move 1, regardless of being an unorthodox game?> In principle, yes.
But since this is a <Pawn and Move> odds game, the PGN would require a null move for Black's first move. That was beyond the technical score of old pgn viewers apparently, thus the FEN starting the game on move 2, after White's first move. . |

You misunderstand me. The starting position is this: click for larger viewthat is equivalent to the Forsyth–Edwards rnbqkbnr / ppppp1pp / 8 / 8 / 4P3 / 8 / PPPP1PPP / RNBQKBNR, and, as such, here White makes the first move. |

Aug-22-21 | | Messiah: <MissScarlett: <But since this is a <Pawn and Move> odds game> <Pawn and Two Moves>... I doubt an Olga fix to address this problem is coming any time soon.> Nope, nope, nope, there is nothing to fix on the viewer. The PGN should be fixed to represent the starting position of this game, from where completely legal moves are getting played like 1.d4 d6 etc. |

 | | MissScarlett: When I did that before (e.g., C Stanley vs Staunton, 1841) I was criticised by you-know-who for not including the null move to retain the original move numeration. |
|
Aug-22-21 | | Z4all: Yes, <pawn and two moves>. The PGN begins like this...
<[FEN "blah...blah"]
1.e4 -- {i.e. null move}
2.d4 etc.>
The contemporaneous literature is analogous.
As for the analysis part of the eqtn hanging, well, <Messiah>'s exact complain (meaning?) is a little obscure, and easily confused with the PGN issues. But the analysis part of <CG> is of little interest to me, as I find SCID much easier and accessible for my purposes. . |
