Sep-28-14		sachistu: This one is a bit of a mystery. CPC,1861,p69 referred to this as Game I and stops after 51...Kf5 saying "and White soon resigned". However, CPC,1861,p141 (referred to the game as Game V) includes the last two moves and says "and White resigns". Mann's Yorkshire Chess History site makes the same mistake saying CPC published all 11 games, and copies CPC's mistake by listing this game as both game 1 and game 5! (with the variance in length as mentioned above). If this was in fact game 1, then game 5 is missing. CPC published another two games between these players; identifying them as "Games between Thorold and Watkinson", and listing them as Game I and Games II. Apparently those two games were not part of the 11 game match. Before anyone goes ballistic, this match followed 19th century options of alternating who was to be the "first player" (e.g. "first to move"). Hence, the end-of-game comments. This custom has already been covered in other posts, so I will not dwell on it here.
