Dec-09-02  refutor: i'm no endgame expert, but it seems that evans got away with the draw by the skin of his teeth...can anyone recommend some improvements for white?
Dec-10-02  drukenknight: why 49 Rg8?
Dec-10-02  ughaibu: The threat was Kd3 and mate, this would also help advance the pawn.
Dec-10-02  drukenknight: Yeah I saw that, I just thought there was another way to deal with that.

I think the problem comes in w/ white losing tempo. the position of his passer is idea. vs a lone K.

WHen I see my K out alone w/ a R I immediately start thinking of controling that little 2x2 space where the R wants to come down. A lone K vs lone R here and the K wins that battle for space.

Im thinking like 42 Kf2 in order to control that little area e/f 2/3.

Dec-10-02  ughaibu: Kf2 looks better than Rg7 certainly.
Dec-10-02  drukenknight: but then I think black can go back and forth w/ the R, refusing to trade. So again draw??? Maybe it is draw all along.
Dec-10-02  ughaibu: Show me your drawing line.
Dec-10-02  drukenknight: Ha good catch! Uga, I am confusing two seperate lines, that is why I mentioned the draw. I was confusing this w/ 46 Ke3 Rxb3 47 Kf2 Rb2+ and they repeat.

Okay back to this line: 42 Kf2 Rf4+ 43 Ke3 Rg4 (I guess) 44 g3

Hmm it seems it becomes a battle of space, with the K controlling that central ground: e/f 3/4.

Can he win this?

Dec-10-02  ughaibu: I dont think 42. ... Rf4 is good as it lets the white king into the centre.
Dec-11-02  drukenknight: yeah, I know. what do you suggest?
