Phony Benoni: <nvrennvren: why didn't he take the a7 pawn?>

I assume you mean this position, after <30...Kh8>:

If White takes the a7-pawn, he just opens up the a-file for Black's rook. After the combination finishes (<35.Rh3>), Black can get the pawn back with ...Rxa2 and also have an active rook.

It probably wouldn't have mattered in the long run, but it was a good idea never to give Lasker any kind of a chance at all.

Mar-24-11  TheFocus: Here is a little known game between Lasker and Torre. According to historian Neil Brennen, historian Eduardo Bauza Mercere first discovered this game in a newspaper different from the newspapers mentioned at the end of the game, but Ken Whyld attributed its rediscovery to Neil Brennen in his <Quotes and Queries> column in BCM.

plang: Certainly, a fun game despite all the errors by both players.

Torre finished in a tie for 5th (out of 21 players) with Tartakover ahead of Reti and Rubinstein.

Sep-08-14  Christoforus Polacco: <Bird - Williams>
wasn't better 31.Be5 ?

<Torre-Lasker>
My proposal :
21.b4 Q:b4 22.Rb1 Qa5 23.Rg3 - and white's rook in the first rank is defended without waste of tempo and black must think about bishop on ''b7''. Off course bishop is safe in this moment. White's rook in the third rank is on ''g3'' one move earlier.

Nov-28-24  SchwartzSpringer: I'm guessing 25...1-0?
Nov-28-24  TheaN: This was supposed to be 25.? I guess, instead of 25....?. I did find the only plausible line to not getting mated straight out <25....Qxh5 26.Rxg7+ Kh8 27.Rxf7+ Kg8 28.Rg7+ Kh8 29.Rxb7+ Kg8 30.Rg7+ Kh8 31.Rg5+ Kh7 32.Rxh5 Kg6!?>, at least winning the piece back, but after <33.Rh3 +-> White's just up a piece and two pawns or three pawns if Black takes on f6.
Nov-28-24  TheaN: For what it's worth, White's threatening both Rxg7+ and Qxb5 after 25.Bf6!!, ie 25....g5/g6 26.Qxh6 #2 and 25....Ng6 defends against mate but 26.Qxb5 +-.

LIFE Master AJ: What a dumb problem!

Famous win for Torre. Is Black facing a "NO WAY OUT" scenario?

Nov-28-24  mel gibson: A strange puzzle -
Black to move and lose. umm.
Yes - the Queens must be swapped with a windmill.

Stockfish 17 says:

25. .. Qxh5

(25. .. Qxh5 (1. ... Qxh5 2.Rxg7+ Kh8 3.Rxf7+ Kg8 4.Rg7+ Kh8 5.Rxb7+ Kg8 6.Rg7+ Kh8 7.Rg5+ Kh7 8.Rxh5 Kg6 9.Ra5 Kxf6 10.d5 Nd7 11.dxe6 Kxe6 12.Nc4+ Kf6 13.Rd1 Re6 14.Nxd6 Ne5 ) -4.97/35 215)

score for Black -4.97 depth 35.

When Black resigns:

43. g3 Nf8

(1. ... Nf8 2.h4+ Kh5 3.Re7 Kg6 4.g4 Rdb5 5.Nxd6 R5b6 6.Nc4 Re6 7.Ne5+ Kh6 8.Rxe6+ Nxe6 9.Rf6+ Kg7 10.Rxe6 Rd8 11.Nf3 Kf7 12.Re3 Rd5 13.Kg2 Rd8 14.Kg3 Kf6) -11.57/39 235

score for Black -11.57 depth 39.

scormus: There are two possibilities. Either <CG> intended 25 W to play, or else they have developed strange ideas about what constitutes a puzzle.

Perhaps I am expecting too much from <CG>, and that I should be satisfied with "finding" 25 ... Qxh5 but that it was only enough to allow B to fight on.

  Teyss: 25...Qxb4 26.Qxh6 Qxe1+ 27.Nf1 Ba6 28.Bxg7 Qxf1#

Easy for a Thursday.

Nov-28-24  Rosbach: White will loose material: 25...Qxh5 26. Rxg7+ Kh8 27. Rg5+ Kh7 28. Rxh5 Kg6
Nov-28-24  Messiah: <Teyss: 25...Qxb4 26.Qxh6 Qxe1+ 27.Nf1 Ba6 28.Bxg7 Qxf1#

Easy for a Thursday.>

Maybe I am blundering something, but 26.Rxg7+ Kh8 27.Rg6+ with Qxh6 leads to 1-0.

perfidious: <Rosbach>, you are correct as far as it goes; but take the windmill theme a few steps beyond.

The concluding line--as played by Torre--runs instead 27.Rxf7+ Kg8 28.Rg7+ Kh8 29.Rxb7+ Kg8+ 30.Rg7+ Kh8 31. Rg5+ Kh7 32.Rxh5 Kg6 33.Rh3 Kxf6 34.Rxh6+, when Black has regained the piece, but is three pawns to the bad.

Nov-28-24  daladno: Some sort of glitch by CG.
Apparently no good tricks left for Black in the give position. If it was meant as White to move the game is too famous for a puzzle.

  Teyss: Hi Messiah,
CG says 25...Black to move so Black has to win. CG cannot be wrong.

Now, if it were 25.White to move, it would be a real Thursday puzzle, provided one manages to see the combo all the way through 34.Rxh6+ when White ends 3 Pawns up.

Nov-28-24  catlover: In the USA, it's Thanksgiving Day. In that spirit, I'm thankful not all the Chessgames puzzles are like this one.
Nov-28-24  stone free or die: Was this <CG>'s way of giving us a deliberate <turkey> problem for <Thanksgiving>?

Very puny.

Nov-28-24  King.Arthur.Brazil: Maybe, the king misses something, move for B to lose? The B seems forced to: 25...Qxh5 26. Rxg7+ Kh8 27. Rxf7+ (when B went on a "pendulum check", every move W take a piece and follow a check). 27... Kg8 28. Rg7+ Kh8 29. Rxb7+ Kg8 30. Rg7+ Kh8 31. Rxa7+?! Kg8 32. Rg7+ Kh8

For 33. g4?? B can't reply 33... Qb5 because 34. Rb7+ Kh8 35. Rxb5 with an extra ♗, But simple Qh3 escaping. Therefore, W must continue 31. Rg5+ Kh7 32. Rxh5 Kg6 33. Rh3 Kxf6 34. Ng4+ Kg6 35. Rxh6+ Kg5 36. h3. with 3 extra ♙.

Nov-28-24  King.Arthur.Brazil: Hi <Teyss> on your good idea <25...Qxb4>, the king will follow with 26. Rxg7+ Kh8 27. Rxf7+ Kg8 28. Rg7+ Kh8 29. Rxb7+ Kg8 30. Rxb4... you know, guys, on thanksgiving day we must thanks CG to capture the enemy's ♕ too... LOL.
Nov-28-24  Messiah: Very Bad!
Nov-28-24  MostlyWatch: Black to Move: yes. Push chair back, get up, go to cafe.
Nov-29-24  Halldor: Well, I just saw that the queen swap would result in a windmill. I tried in vain to find something better...
