perfidious: An object example of why the 7....dxc3 line has long been known as the Compromised Defence: even the great Anderssen couldn't hold this for Black.

wwall: After 20.Rad1, Black should play 20..d5 and not allow Black to play 21.Bxe6.

Anderssen played 22...Kf8 and soon got his king exposed. Best seems to bw 22...Kd8 23.Bxd4 Qe7 24.Bd5 Rb8.

After 23.Bxd4, Anderssen tried 23...Qf5, which is probably the losing move. Better may be 23...Qe7 24.Bd5 c6 25.Qf3+ Ke8, but White has 26.Qc3, threatening 27.Re1 and 27.Bxc6.

24...c6 is no good as Black's king is soon under attack, but what else? 24...Bb7 25.Bxb7 Re8 loses a piece for Black.

After 24...c6, White played 25.Qa3+ and won. But more brilliant might have been 25.Qb4+! Ke8 (25...c5 26.Bxc5+ bxc5 27.Qxc5+ Ke8 28.Re1+ Kd8 29.Qa5 mate) 26.Re1+ Kd8 27.Qxb6+! axb6 28.Bxb6 mate.
