Kibitzer's Corner
Jan-03-04  Resignation Trap: In the book of this tournament (Havana, 1913), Capablanca made this note at the end of the game:

"No comments have been appended to this game because the annotator is convinced that Black made no effort at all to win, and it is pointless to indicate the weakness of various moves when in fact they were played with the sole object of avoiding defeating one of the competitors."

Capablanca's note at he Jaffe-Marshall game in the second half of the tournament was written in the same manner:

C Jaffe vs Marshall, 1913

offramp: It seems a bit harsh to criticise someone for not playing to win as black against a far stronger player who eventually won the tournament.

However, with 21...Qh2 (threatening 22...Bd3) 22.e4 Bg4 23.f3 Nxh5 black would indeed have won.

keypusher: But wouldn't Jaffe help Marshall more by losing, as he did in their other game?
