1984 World Chess Championship
Compiled by Penguincw

★★★ INTRO ★★★

The 1984 World Chess Championship was between 33 year old defending champion Anatoly Karpov of the Soviet Union and 22 year old challenger Garry Kasparov also of the Soviet Union.

★★★ QUALIFICATIONS ★★★

Karpov for the second time in a row defended his title against Viktor Korchnoi (see Game Collection: 1981 World Chess Championship for games and more info), and it was time for a new challenger.

This time, a slightly different format was used. Instead of two interzonal tournaments with the top 3 advancing, there were 3 tournaments, with the top 2 advancing.

In the first one (see Las Palmas Interzonal (1982) for games and more info), Zoltan Ribli and Vasily Smyslov advanced. They scored 9/13 and 8.5/13 respectively.

Two months later, the second one (see Game Collection: Moscow Interzonal 1982 for games and more info) took place in Moscow. Kasparov won with 10/13, one and a half points ahead of Alexander Beliavsky. Mikhail Tal and Ulf Andersson both scored 8/13, and played for a reserve spot in case someone decides to not play in the Candidates (see Malmo Candidates Reserve Playoff (1983) for games and more info). The match ended up being tied, with Tal placing ahead Andersson on tie breaks. This eventually was not needed.

In the last interzonal (see Toluca Interzonal (1982) for games and more info), Lajos Portisch and Eugenio Torre both tied for 8.5/13.

In the Candidates, the two finalists from last time, Viktor Korchnoi and Robert Huebner, joined the above 6 players. In the quarter finals, it was a best of 10 (first to 5 1/2). The quarter-finals saw Kasparov down Beliavsky 6-3 (see Game Collection: WCC Index (Kasparov-Beliavsky 1983) for games), Korchnoi beat Portisch with the same score (see Game Collection: WCC Index (Korchnoi-Portisch 1983) for games) and Ribli defeated Torre 6-4 (see Ribli - Torre Candidates Quarterfinal (1983) for games and more info). Smyslov and Hübner were tied after 10, and after 4 more games were still tied. The winner (Smyslov) won a roulette wheel spin (see Smyslov - Huebner Candidates Quarterfinal (1983) for games and more info).

There were problems starting the semi-final Kasparov-Korchnoi match, and Kasparov initially forfeited the match. However, the match did get started, and even though Kasparov lost the first game (Kasparov vs Korchnoi, 1983), he came back and won 7-4 in the best of (first to 6 1/2). (see Game Collection: WCC Index (Kasparov-Korchnoi 1983) for games and more info) The other match saw Smyslov beat Ribli 7 1/2-4 1/2 (see Game Collection: WCC Index (Smyslov-Ribli 1983) for games).

The final match was best of 16 (first to 8 1/2). Kasparov easily won the match 8 1/2-4 1/2 over Smyslov, and earned the right to challenge Karpov for the title (see Game Collection: WCC Index (Kasparov-Smyslov 1983) for games).

★★★ CONDITIONS ★★★

The match took place in Moscow, Soviet Union. It was the same format as last time, which was first to win 6 games, draws not counting, with unlimited number of games. Note: This match is measured in wins. Total score is in brackets. The first game was played on September 10th, 1984.

★★★ FINAL ★★★

The last round (48) was played on February 10th, 1985. Karpov had the black pieces and for the 21st game in a row, needed just a win to defend his title. However, Kasparov managed to win that game to make the match score 5-3 in Karpov's favour. However, the match took nearly 5 months, and the FIDE President at the time, Florencio Campomanes, decided to end the match as so, and make a re-match later in the year. However, since Karpov's lead was wiped away, if he lost in 1985, he has a right for a re-match in 1986.
