US championship tournaments (meta)
Compiled by crawfb5

-- under construction --

A continuation of Game Collection: US Championship matches (meta), which are the US championship matches prior to the establishment of the championship tournament in 1936, which ended match play for the championship (with a few exceptions to be noted). This meta collection has links to US championship tournaments starting with Game Collection: 1936 US Championship and ending with Game Collection: Reshevsky-Bisguier 1957 match.

I have somewhat arbitrarily decided to end my coverage with the Reshevsky-Bisguier 1957 match (prior to the 1957 tournament) for several reasons. The 1957 tournament was not only notable for being the start of yearly tournaments, but it was also Fischer's first US championship. I don't particularly want to cover yearly events, and especially very recent yearly events. Also, as I move forward, there is more and more overlap with existing game collections. So the end of the "Reshevsky era" just prior to the start of the "Fischer era" seemed to be a natural break point to me.

1936 US championship tournament Game Collection: 1936 US Championship -- The championship tournament was initially set up to be held every two years. Reshevsky would win the first tournament along with most of the others he entered, but not without some close calls.

1938 US championship tournament Game Collection: 1938 US Championship -- Reshevsky repeats as tournament champion. <under construction>

1940 US championship tournament Game Collection: 1940 US Championship -- Fine was unable to convert his advantage in his last round game with Reshevsky and only drew, so Reshevsky won the championship with another of his fortunate finishes.

1941 Reshevsky-Horowitz match Game Collection: Reshevsky-Horowitz 1941 match -- Horowitz was still recovering from injuries suffered in an automobile accident and had been unable to to play in the 1940 tournament. This match was organized with the understanding the winner would hold the title until the 1942 tournament. <under construction>

1942 US championship tournament Game Collection: 1942 US Championship -- Kashdan and Reshevsky finished as the first co-winners of the championship tournament, although the infamous "clock forfeit" ruling may have influenced the outcome. Reshevsky would win the playoff match held approximately six months later. <under construction>

1942 US championship playoff match Game Collection: 1942 US championship playoff match -- Reshevsky claimed sole possession of the championship by defeating Kashdan in an 11-game match.

1944 US championship tournament Game Collection: 1944 US championship <under construction>

1946 Denker-Steiner match Game Collection: 1946 Denker-Steiner match -- Although commonly called a <playoff> match in online databases, it was a challenge match held months <before> the 1946 tournament. <under construction>

1946 US championship tournament Game Collection: 1946 US Championship <under construction>

1948 US championship tournament Game Collection: 1948 US Championship <under construction>

1951 US championship tournament Game Collection: 1951 US Championship This is the only US championship prior to the emergence of Fischer in which Reshevsky played but did not place first. Mengarini, who finished 8th, handed Reshevsky his first loss in a US championship game since 1936.

1952 Evans-Steiner match -- We currently have none of these games in our database, so I have not (yet) started a games collection (games submitted 9/12/2011). Originally scheduled for 16 games, the final two games were postponed due to the upcoming US Open in Tampa. They were never played, presumably because Evans had secured a winning lead of 8.5-2.5 by winning Game 11.

1954 US championship tournament Game Collection: 1954 US Championship <under construction>
