Jan-24-15  Baron Harkonnen: <Playing the Sicilian against him is suicidal.>

Absolutely..We all know he's a freak and a Sicilian expert. And people keep on going..

Bad for them :-)

chancho: Reminds me of what they said about playing the Sicilian against the late, great Paul Keres.

It was sicilicide.

Jan-24-15  Baron Harkonnen: <Kanatahodets: <HeMateMe: magnus has to be watching the kid. He could emerge as a true challenger, in about seven years> 3-4 years>

Next year will be his breakthrough at super elite tourneys. And my hint is that he will adapt fast than most newcomers and will not going to fade away.

Wei Yi vs A Haast, 2015

WOW!!!

Jan-24-15  bennyvsfischer: thats was a tough one for timman...
Jan-24-15  fisayo123: Navara could only draw vs Sevian. All Wei Yi needs to at least tie for joint first place is a draw tomorrow vs Saleh.
Jan-24-15  belgradegambit: Good day for the Americans today. Shank wins and young Sevian holds Navara to a draw with Black. Impressive!
Jan-24-15  dumbgai: Wei Yi should make a quick draw with Salem tomorrow. Save some strength for Gibraltar and lock up next year's invite, if Salem will allow it.
Jan-24-15  FairyPromotion: <dumbgai: Wei Yi should make a quick draw with Salem tomorrow. Save some strength for Gibraltar and lock up next year's invite, if Salem will allow it.>

With a win he gets his rating to 2700. I don't expect him to back down!

Jan-24-15  FairyPromotion: <fisayo123: All Wei Yi needs to at least tie for joint first place is a draw tomorrow vs Saleh.> Actually Wei has already secured finishing on joint first place. Next year he'll be at masters group, but I wouldn't be surprised if he gets some invitations to other top events during this year.
Jan-24-15  MarkFinan: As good as Wei Yi is ,that was his opponent playing pretty awful today. He always seems to castle queen side in these Sicilians though, at least the games I've seen.

Penguincw: With Navara drawing today, Wei Yi is guaranteed to finish in a share of first place, at least.

Tomorrow, Wei Yi faces Saleh while Navara faces the other David, David Klein (both podium finishers have black). I don't think finishing in sole or shared first makes a difference, but what if it does?

Wei Yi might want to push for a win, but there's also the off chance of overpushing and losing. Then, Navara might win, and there's a tie.

But again, Wei Yi will likely want to settle for a draw (but obviously win if he gets the chance) and perhaps try to join the 2700 club in the first few rounds at Gibraltar.

Penguincw: Navara has won to tie with Wei Yi, who is still playing. However, Wei Yi is currently in a drawn endgame, so he's still likely to take the tournament.
Jan-25-15  chessmoron: It's over. Wei Yi has done it. Congrats.
Jan-25-15  dumbgai: Shankland had an undefeated +5 and gained 9 rating points.
Jan-25-15  belgradegambit: 5 wins pretty good performance for Sevian.
Jan-25-15  dumbgai: Ari Dale actually had the 2nd best performance relative to rating. He overperformed by 116 Elo points (2291 rating, 2407 TPR). When someone finishes a winless -6 and still gains a bunch of rating points, I think it's fair to say that they probably didn't belong.

Yes I know he qualified via the amateur tourney.

Jan-25-15  Nf8: <Yes I know he [Ari Dale] qualified via the amateur tourney>

Well, when they had 3 groups the winner of this tournament used to qualify to the C Group...

Jan-25-15  zakkzheng: Two winners from this tourney: Wei Yi is one for sure, another one is Sevian Samuel.
Jan-25-15  zakkzheng: The meaning of Wei's first name, Yi, is "playing chess". Very interesting.
Jan-25-15  siamesedream: Congtatulations to GM Wei Yi for winning Tata Challengers 2015.
Jan-25-15  fisayo123: <siamesedream> Congratulations to GM Wei Yi for <destroying> Tata Challengers 2015.
Jan-25-15  mrandersson: Shame for Timman but we all have bad tournys sometimes. Like The Doors said

The old get old and the young gets stronger.

Nature's first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf's a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf,
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day
Nothing gold can stay.>
Jan-25-15  LucB: Wow, Navara and Shankland did quite well also!

<zakkzheng: The meaning of Wei's first name, Yi, is "playing chess". Very interesting.>

Really? I thought 'Yi' meant 'one' in Mandarin: http://www.wikihow.com/Count-to-Ten...

'must be a different tone then..
