 | | sisyphus: On the off day yesterday everyone went to the country for some sport shooting. Here's Zhu Chen practicing the skills expected of Qatari chess players: http://www.northuralscup.ru/2007/ga... It's hard to imagine this happening in America. |
Jul-29-07 | | percyblakeney: Hou Yifan's third loss today, with white against Lahno. |
Jul-29-07 | | doremi: It was a nice win of Lahno as well, a tactical shot which is in fact Hou's own specialty, IMHO. Congrats to Lahno! |
Jul-29-07 | | Astardis: Another loss for Galliamova :( |
Jul-29-07 | | percyblakeney: Muzychuk may be on the way to let another clear win slip away, this time against Stefanova. |
Jul-29-07 | | percyblakeney: Finally drawn in Muzychuk-Stefanova, Zhu Chen and Lahno in the lead with two rounds to go. |
Jul-29-07 | | percyblakeney: Muzychuk has played well in the beginning of several games, to then drop points after mistakes in the opponent's time trouble. One of many missed wins today against Stefanova: click for larger viewHere Rc8+, Rc7+ and rook exchange, and then Bd4 wins immediately since the black knight can't get out. It's just to walk over with the king and force Nc5, Bxc5 and win the trivial pawn ending. Muzychuk tried another plan and ended up with a draw. |
Jul-30-07 | | Karpova: <percyblakeney: Muzychuk has played well in the beginning of several games, to then drop points after mistakes in the opponent's time trouble.>
Did she try to blitz them while she wasn't in time trouble herself? |
Jul-30-07 | | percyblakeney: <Karpova> It has more seemed as if she gets nervous when close to winning, or has tried to unnecessarily complicate positions in the opponent's time trouble. She has had something like ten minutes against less than one minute in her last games in clearly winning positions, and then started to go wrong without playing exceptionally fast. It's still a good sign that she can get winning positions against players like Ushenina and Stefanova. |
Jul-30-07 | | Karpova: <percyblakeney>
Thanks! I hope she'll become more stable in the future. She's not lacking the necessary talent, for sure. |
Jul-30-07 | | percyblakeney: Pogonina is doing well, she is the by far lowest rated player and today won against rating favourite Hou Yifan, and shares the lead with one round to go. Stefanova lost again (with white against Zhao Xue) and it's only thanks to the miracle save against Muzychuk she avoids having four losses in a row. Before the final round Pogonina, Lahno, Zhao Xue and Zhu Chen share the lead, while Pähtz and Hou Yifan share last. |
Jul-30-07 | | mandar: I pity that little girl.....(Hou)
she shld learn from her losses....
man she is just banged in every game..
lets hope to get some better play from her ..... |
Jul-31-07 | | percyblakeney: Zhu Chen won against Stefanova and assured herself of at least shared first, if Zhao Xue-Lahno is drawn she will be sole winner. Not a good tournament for Stefanova, very close to five losses in a row. Hou Yifan won against Galliamova. |
Jul-31-07 | | percyblakeney: Zhao Xue won against Lahno and shares first with Zhu Chen. Interesting that the difference between men and women players is smaller in China than in most other countries. In for example Russia the strongest woman isn't really close to the top 100, while China has 6 women in the top 30, and more than 20 in the top 100. And it would be more if Zhu Chen hadn't left. |
Jul-31-07 | | PaulKeres: I think Zhu Chen wins on tie-break, as it is decided firstly on player head to head with same points, and Zhu beat Zhao < http://www.northuralscup.ru/2007/ne... > |
Jul-31-07 | | PaulKeres: Muzychuk v Pogonina is still going in the final round, only game left, its currently at move 94! A queen ending. But Pogonina can't win this one to tie for first as she's 2 pawns down and looking to get a draw by perpetual check it would seem |
Jul-31-07 | | percyblakeney: 154 moves before Muzychuk gives up her winning tries, hard work for her in this tournament with games in 68, 75, 86, 94 and 154 moves. |
Jul-31-07 | | PaulKeres: Yes, well done to Pogonina for getting the draw there.
That's it, tournament now over. |
Jul-31-07 | | whiteshark: Black could be pipped at the post:

After <144... Kd5??> it's a TB loss in 47 half moves. |
Jul-31-07 | | percyblakeney: On the whole a very entertaining tournament, only 42% draws and 4 of the 5 shortest games were decisive, Pogonina and Muzychuk had a move average around 70, tournament winner Zhu Chen close to 60. Pogonina was a positive surprise, 0.5 from first as lowest rated participant. |
Jul-31-07 | | alexapple: Zhao Xue earns a 9-game GM norm. In 2006 Olympiad, she already earned a 20-game GM norm by performance rating over 2600. So,Zhao Xue becomes a GM!! |
Jul-31-07 | | JYMMI: The tournament ended, <Zhu Chen> wins with <Zhao Xu> in the second place and <Natalya Pogonina> in the third place.
Tournament galleries here:http://www.northuralscup.ru/2007/ga... (day off and veteran's are my favorites). Crosstable here: http://www.northuralscup.ru/2007/to... <Congratulations, <Zhu Chen>> |

Although she lost a won game against Zhu Chen! |
Aug-01-07 | | wanabe2000: This was the most fantastic tournament I have ever followed. Such fighting chess and interesting games. Out of 90 games, 26 were decisive with no easy draws. Congratulations to all the players and thank you. |
