Jul-05-09 Bacrot vs Carlsen, 2009
piever: Is 24 Bd4 a home prepared novelty? at first I thought that Bacrot had found at home an improvement in the 21. Qg7 line of the Botvinnik semislav, but both the commentator at chessdom.com and fritz think that black is better. Does anybody have a clue about what's going on? |

Apr-25-09 Breyer vs J Esser, 1917
piever: I saw it until 23. gxf7 (black's play was completely forced) but then, after black had returned part of the material advantage, I didn't know how to continue the attack (f5! in order to bring out the QB was a good idea by Breyer). Anyway, I checked the combination with my computer ... |

Apr-11-09 Shirov vs Movsesian, 2005
piever: Ouch, after 31. hxg7 I considered 31..Bxd1 to be the best black move. It isn't, but I wonder how many player with black would play the right move here... It's a very nice puzzle after 31. hxg7: black to move and draw. Really impressive game by Shirov! |

Jan-15-09 Anand vs I Morovic Fernandez, 1990
piever: Well, I had 34. Qd8 Rff8 35. Qd7 Rg8 (black needs to prevent mate on g7) 36. Qc6 threatening the bishop on c4 and Qxf6 with mate. After 36... Rgf8 Qxc4 white's passed pawns should win easily.... It looks like Anand found a more elegant solution... |

Dec-28-08 Team White vs Team Black, 2008
piever: Wow, it looks like the very strange moves that we had planned after 14. d4 were actually good, otherwise I don't see why they played 14. Ne4. Anyway I think it is possible that they missed 14.. Nb8! |

Dec-14-08 A Poluljahov vs Tseshkovsky, 1996
piever: I could only find the first four moves... After 33 Qf5+ Ke8 (any other king moves loses quickly) I tried to see what white could do, but after 34 Qxb5+ Bc6 I failed to visualize that 35. Qb8+! is winning and looking only at the diagram of the starting position is very difficult to ... |

Dec-06-08 Caruana vs E Berg, 2008
piever: Wow, astonishing....
After spending some time trying to find a solution all I came up with is: "well, 20. Nxf7 Kxf7 21. Rxe6 deserves attention..."
Excellent game by Caruana! |

Dec-05-08 Dominguez Perez vs Buhmann, 2008
piever: I found 39. Nhf5 gxf5 40. Bxh6+ Kxh6 41. Qxf6+ Kh7 42. exf5 winning for white. I didn't spend much time on 39. ... Nxf5 because after 40. exf5 material is even but white has some threats on the seventh rank winning the bishop and it looks like black's kingside will quickly collaps. ... |

Nov-23-08 Keene vs S Kerr, 1979
piever: Very nice game, with excellent annotations... Does anybody know what book are they from? 9. a3 is a very interesting idea. In the game white gets a (very) improved Saemisch variation of the Nimzo Indian, but I'm not sure that white is better after 10...exd4 11. cxd4 Nxd4 12. Bb2 c5 ... |

Nov-15-08 M Ulybin vs Sveshnikov, 1988
piever: 19 Qg4? It makes me feel better when I see that even strong players sometimes overlook tactics... <dzechiel>: I had your same line (19...f5 20 exf5 h5 21 Qf3 Rxf5) and your same assessment, that is too say "white just can't defend everything", and didn't analyze farther. After ... |
