bunkerputt: <VooDooMoves 29. Qe8+ Bxe8 30. Rxe8#> So flashy... 29. Qd8+ Be8 30. Qxe8# saves the queen and mates too. In this case, it doesn't matter, but as a practical decision, I've avoided catastrophe by not giving up material unnecessarily during a combination that halfway into ...

   Sep-25-08 Ivanchuk vs X Bu, 2008 (replies)

bunkerputt: <notyetagm>, This game should be titled "Ivanchuk handed winning position by a 2700 on move 9(!)" ;)

bunkerputt: I got bit by the 43...Re1+ bug, too. I saw that I had to take care of white's advanced pawn, but figured I could check the king around and win the knight and pawn with tempo. Crafty 21.6 says no way to that idea: depth=16 1/21 +0.01 45. Ne3 Qxh2 46. d7 Qxh4 47. Rxa7 h5 48. a5 ...

bunkerputt: I saw that g5+ led the win of the rook with d4+ if Kxg5, but on hxg5, I couldn't find Kg6 and h4. Those are really impressive moves to me. Seeing mating nets several moves ahead seems to be one of my visualization weaknesses.

bunkerputt: <Once> I had exactly the same experience and chose Bg6. I'm really impressed with the game continuation. It really highlights a deficiency in my thought process.

bunkerputt: 10...Qd6 seems like quite an improvement over 10...Qh4+ played in Fischer vs Matulovic, 1970

Sep-04-08 Anand vs Kasparov, 1995 (replies)

bunkerputt: "Didnt Fischer say of the Dragon. That all white Had to do was line up pieces on the H-file then sac,sac mate!! :-)" That sounds like Fischer.. After all, chess is an incredibly simple game that anybody can play. All you do is open with 1. e4, get better pieces, and voila, ...

bunkerputt: My thinking when I saw this puzzle was, "I wonder if 25...Re8 (26. Qxe8 Qxf3+ 27. Kg1 Qg2#) 26. Qd1 (26. Qd3 Qxf3!) Qxf3+ 27. Qxf3 Rxe1# goes anywhere".
