Feb-22-10 King's Gambit Accepted, Abbazia Defense (C36) (replies)

Wassily: If you want to play this line, why not play the Falkbeer move order? Then if 3. exd5 exf4. This at least lets White make the error of fxe5?? Qh4+, and also possibly inferior moves to 4. Nf3.

   Feb-21-10 E Naipal vs E Kholoud, 2008

Wassily: I don't think Black can make progress after 38. Kxc3 Ke5 39. Kd3 Bc4+ 40. Ke3 Bf1 41. Bc2 Bxh3 42. Bd1 Bg2 43. Bc2 Bf1 44. Bb3 Bh3 45. Bd1, etc.

Wassily: What is the idea behind 28. Qg5 ?

   May-25-08 King's Gambit Declined (C30) (replies)

Wassily: Question on the Falkbeer: 1. e4 e5 2. f4 d5 3. exd5 e4 4. d3 Qxd5 5. Qe2 Nf6 6. Nc3 Bb4 7. Bd2 Bxc3+ 8. Bxc3 Bf5 ?! 9. Bxf6 fxg6 10. g4 Bd7 11. dxe4 Qa5+ 12. c3 Nc6 Ordinary move is 8. ... Bg4 9. dxe4, so Black must have played inaccurately here. Despite being up a pawn and having ...

   Apr-08-07 Spassky vs D J Banks, 1971 (replies)

Wassily: The Scandinavian with 2. ... Nf6 is a perfectly playable system, particularly below 2000. A lot of players are surprised by the move and it immediately takes them out of their pet e4 lines. It also has some sting to it; g6 can be an important move. The Scandinavian gambit is ...

   Feb-17-07 Kurajica vs P Littlewood, 1980 (replies)

Wassily: Both Black's 15. ... Be6 with the planned recapture fxe6 as well as 17. ... h6 seem awfully weakening of Black's kingside position. Do the tangible benefits of these moves justify them? I mean fxe6 does strengthen black's center and open up the f-file for the rook so perhaps this is

Wassily: Congratulations all.
